As has been pointed out by others 1.Roy Moore only received about 52% of the vote in the general election for the Alabama Chief Justice Position.
2.This poll is consistent with the poll that gave more a 45-40% lead.
I think what is going on is the 15% or so are pretty much entirely Republicans many of whom did not vote for him for the State Supreme Court, and those who did but weren't happy with him because he kept getting impeached.
I think they are deciding whether they have a problem with Moore being 1 out of 100 U.S Senators as opposed to when they had to vote for him as the twice impeached State Supreme Court Justice back to the State Supreme Court (or once impeached), or if they're worried if he'll embarrass Alabama.
Based on this, I wouldn't be surprised if Moore's and the Republican Party strategy here will be to make Doug Jones even more controversial than Roy Moore is.
