NBC NEWS- Decision 2002(Coverage after the Polls have closed ):

NBC election theme: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAvbyDi0I_c

1:05 am

Brokaw: NBC news is now willing to project that in Oregon - Judge Ted Kulongoski will be elected governor . In Hawaii - Mayor Larry Lingle will be elected governor .

2:13 am

Brokaw: We can project that the Republicans will win control of the Senate as we can now project that Norm Coleman as defeated Walter Mondale in Minnesota and that means Republicans will hold at least 51 seats in the Senate .

Russert: Now the President is in the same position he was from 1994-2000 with both houses in congress controlled by the opposition , and unlike in 1994 he lost both houses despite losing less seats than the sitting party does in an midterm election. What he does in the next two years will be a mystery but there are areas he and the republicans agree on and can work together on.

Brokaw: Yes I agree , and we have been informed that President Clinton will be giving a press conference about his reaction to  election results at 9:30 am .

Russert: What will be difficult is though is his bully pulpit will be weakened as despite Clinton popularity , the Democrats lost and that may cause problems for the President.

2:44 am:

Brokaw: We can project that in Arizona Mrs.Janet Napolitano  will be elected governor , Oklahoma former Representative and NFL player Steve Largent will be elected Governor of Oklahoma

Alright now we will too Doris Kearnis Goodwin for he reaction

Brokaw: A 2nd consecutive election where the control of congress has been raser thin.

Goodwin: And the fact that it is this close is something what hasnt happened in more then a century maybe . From the 1890s-1930s the Republicans dominated congress , and then from the 1930s -mid 1990s the Democrats did , and now it seems like neither party has the edge.

Brokaw: But why is it and what do u think about the massive amount of turnover in the gubernatorial races so far

Goodwin: Well the reason I think its close now is that both parties have a particular good reputation, with the Republicans giving us the great economy of the 1980s and winning the cold war , and the Democrats giving us the great economy of the 1990s and now on pace to win the War on Terror , unlike in previous times when only one party was popular for decades upon decades. For the Governors races , I believe the same reason the popularity of both parties has  in my view caused voters to decide to give the other party a chance for a change.

Russert: But werent the Republicans and Democrats popular in the 1950s-1964 as well

Goodwin: Eisenhower was popular but the Republican party as a whole wasnt .

Brokaw: Ok we are ready to make our final projection of the night, in Alabama  Governor Don Siegelman will be narrowly reelected.

Brokaw: We have just got word that NBC news will not project the winner in the South Dakota Senate Race , in which the difference between both candidates is less than 50 votes tonight. So that means we will be ending our coverage of Decision Night 2002 , so good night everyone and I hope to see you back tomorrow evening for NBC Nightly News.

President Clinton reacts to election results:

Clinton : Last night I spoke with Republican leaders in both the house and the senate and congratulated them for their victory last night. We all agreed to work with each other to improve our country , and not go back to the era of partisanship.

Reporter: What was your reaction to the results last night

Clinton : I obviously would have preferred the democrats to win but I also understand its not my job to work for the Democratic Party but the American people , which means working with whomever they decide to send to congress.

Reporter: The South Dakota Senate race is really close, and some people say that race may end up in the courts. What do you think about that

Clinton: Well first we should wait for the recount to be completed before making any speculation of what might happen after it. It is important that everyone vote has been counted , and that should be the first priority at the moment.

Reporter: What issues have you decided to work on with the Republicans in congress

Clinton: We will decide that when I personally meet with the Republican leaders soon.

Brokaw: President Clinton announced today that he will not run for a 4th term. Here's what he said.

Clinton: Today I have decided that I will not seek another term as your President. While there are things what will be needed to addressed after my current term ends, I dont believe they will be great enough for me to seek a 4th term and make me the longest serving president even more than FDR, who was one of the best president we have ever had. It has been a great honor being your president but in two years it will be time to pass the torch to someone else.

Socialist Senator Bernie Sanders talks about a possible run in 2004, and Clinton's legacy on Meet the Press

Tim Russert: Today , our guest will be congress's only socialist Senator Bernie Sanders .

Bernie: Nice to be on

Russert: You have been very disillusioned at late with the Clinton Administration  , why is that

Bernie: Well the fact is President Clinton on the vast majority of the issues has governed to the right of where the Republicans of the 60s and 70s including Nixon governed let alone the Democrats of the time. In fact on some issues he has moved to even the right of where the president everyone believes is the most conservative post war president , Ronald Reagan governed.

Russert: How has he been to the right of Ronald Reagan

Bernie: The fact is he gutted welfare in ways Ronald Reagan wouldnt have believed was possible,  he passed so called tough on crime bills which made Reagan crime policy look soft , and under his presidency the prison population increased more then it did in the 12 years of Reagan and Bush. He also signed trade deals which are such a big gift to corporations if Reagan proposed them they would have been defeated , and got more large scale deregulation passed.

Russert: Well every time there is a president , Democrat or Republican we have people from their base say tehy didnt go far enough

Sanders: Its not that he didnt go far enough or fail to change the status quo , he moved the country more to the right and has almost no progressive success which in the 20th century every democrat except him had .

President Woodrow Wilson passed laws restricting child labor, increasing worker safety, passed the 8 hour work day , and built the framework for international cooperation in the future. Franklin Roosevelt passed the New Deal which brought this country out of the terrible depression , passed social security , built much of this country's infrastructure with public work projects and defeated fascism. President Truman de-segregated our armed forces , rebuilt western Europe  , made housing more affordable for poor Americans , and passed the GI bill , President Kennedy saved us from a possible nuclear war , and could have done much more if not for tragedy . President Johnson gave us the civil rights act, Medicare and Medicaid , and created programs bring people out of poverty . President Carter brought trust back to the white house , and greatly reduced our use of force which has staed that way ofr years .

Clinton on the other hand , passed right wing legislation and those are what he is most proud of .

Russert: Well those presidents had their downs too : Woodrow Wilson supported many racist laws , FDR had the interment camps, and LBJ had Vietnam .

Sanders: Yes they have their downs, but its no doubt that at the end of each of their presidency they made they made the country more porgressive.

Russert: Ok what will you do to stop it then

Sanders: Well over the next few months , Senator Feingold ,Senator Bradley, Congressman Kucinich , Congressman Brown , and I will decide which one of us will run

Russert: Wait you may run, and of which party

Sanders: As a democrat as you have to be a nominee of either party to win , and I will only run if none of the candidates I will be talking to decides to run.

Russert: Ok thanks to having you on .

President Clinton 2003 State of the Union:

President Clinton: Mr.Speaker , Mr. Vice President , Members of Congress, and the American people today we gather together in the sanctuary of democracy , and we gather not as representatives of the Democrats or Republicans but representatives of the American people (Applause). I am also required to report to you the state of our union is as strong as it ever has been(Applause). 16 months after those terrible attacks on the morning of September the 11th, we have captured all the leaders behind those terrible attacks that day, and removed the people who harbored them from power(Standing Ovation). Currently our soldiers in Afghanistan is rebuilding the war struck nation and taking out boxes of resistance to the rebuilding effort , so it can be ready to join the list of democracies  all around the world(Standing Ovation ). While we may have dealt with Afghanistan , they werent the only countries in the world who collaborate with terrorists .

One of those nations is Syria who repeatedly works with Hamas whose goals is to destroy Israel , fight an illegal war which terrorizes the people of Lebanon and continues to build WMD . If we want to defeat terrorism we must stop the Syrian regime first. In my  opinion Sanctions, and limited airstrikes will not stop them and the only way to stop them is too complete defeat them in an air war(Applause). To accomplish this though we need as many allies as possible and one of those allies is India , who have dealt with problems like this ever since they got independent.  One way we can do that is to approve the trade deal with India which not only helps their country but our home. This trade deal will create millions of new jobs that it will eventually cause another boom(Cheers).

Lastly I want to talk about is our failing infrastructure .  Infrastructure is the backbone of our economy, as without the necessary infrastructure we never would have made leaps we did both in the technological or financial (applause) . Today we need to expand broadband coverage all around the US because that may be the future of the economy which means we need as large of a customer base as possible(Applause). People accuse this of more deficit spending, but I disagree as we can always make up for the cost of the necessary infrastructure with spending cuts in other areas. So not only will this plan improve our infrastructure , it will create new jobs, and make us cut spending in other areas. God Bless you , and May god bless America

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist Response to the President's Speech:

Frist: God evening , today I am here to talk about the issues the President talked about and my thoughts about his speech. The President talked about how investing in infrastructure, and how he believed investing in it would help our economy. He is right , but he left out an important point about why we have had difficulties in doing so. One difficultly the government has when it comes to rebuilding or even building new infrastructure is all the regulatory agencies we have to go through to get the project approved in the first place. This means that it could take in many cases years before we even start on the project , and even then we have to go through multiple regulatory agencies every step of the project before it finally gets built. In many cases we have to go through different regulatory agencies which are similar making it a redundant process.   So I want to tell the President , the Republicans are willing to spend money on infrastructure but you must agree to cut all the unnecessary red tape as well so we arent just wasting money.

Another Issue the President talked about is Syria , and his talk that we need to get tougher. I totally agree with the President that we need to get tougher but what we also need is a strategic plan which will make their government give in and agree to all the terms the US government set to it. That means we must improve our foreign intelligence agencies , so we can track down where Assad is keeping his WMD, so we know which sites to destroy. If we do that , along with Sanctions then yes I believe the Syrian Government will cave, but just doing airstrikes at places what dont do anything to accomplish our ultimate goal will not result in Syria listing to us. Anyway I pray for the President success , because his success means a better America , and I will also pray to the people because at the end of the day its not Washington that makes America great , but its people. Thank you and goodnight.

Breaking News: House overwhelmingly the Free Trade Agreement between America and India:

Brokaw: The House passed the 2001 free trade agreement between the United States of America and India on a vote of 293-142. We are also getting news that Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist will put the Free Trade agreement on the Senate floor for debate tomorrow ,and hopes that they can pass this agreement within the week. Now to speak with NBC's David Gregory about the chances of it passing the Senate this time around unlike in 2001

Gregory: Well Senate Majority Leader Frist has indeed told me he believes with the Senate having 2 more Republicans in the Senate that they indeed will have the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster , while last time they only had 58-59 senators at most, which meant that the agreement could not overcome a filibuster. He also wants to get this done as fast as possible , as he very well remembers during the summer of 2001 , as more time passed the stronger the opposition got . This time he does not want that to happen , and he believes that it will once again fail to pass if more and more time passes.

Brokaw: So he will likely speed this up

Frist: Yes , and as of now debate on this agreement  has started , and the Senate Majority Leader is hoping to take a vote on this agreement by the beginning of next week.

Breaking News: Free Trade Agreement passes Senate , as there are enough votes to overcome filibuster. President Clinton to arrive shortly at signing ceremony.

Clinton: Today thanks to the efforts of both our parties , we will have a new ally both in the military side and economic side . This free trade agreement will mean that the US will be trade partners with the 2nd most populated country on earth, and a country growing really fast. This free trade agreement will strengthen our economy and India's meaning everyone will win , and that at the end of the day is what the goal of this agreement was. Clinton Signs Bill

AFL-CIO files a lawsuit , claiming that this free trade agreement is unconstitutional .

AFL-CIO statement on the passage of the bill:

The passage of this bill is a terrible day for the working class of this country, as thanks to this bill large corporations will be able to drive down wages by outsourcing jobs to India . We also believe that this bill is unconstitutional as the Constitution states that all treaties must be ratified by 2/3 of the Senate and for this bill only 61% of the Senate voted to ratify  this agreement.

Russ Feingold and Dennis Kucinich to run for President whille  Sanders, Dodd, and Brown will not run

Feingold : Yesterday , was an example of how much to the right the Democratic Party has moved to the right during the Clinton years. I want people to remember that during the Reagan and Bush years the Democratic party opposed these so called free trade agreements and did our best to make sure they never pass . Now under Clinton, not only has he made sure even worse trade agreements then what Reagan proposed  passed he actively worked with the Republicans to make sure they pass despite the majority of his own party opposing it.

Another of Ronald Reagan's dream was to pass welfare reform , and repeal New Deal banking regulations. Those dreams did indeed come true but they did not come true under his presidency , or the presidency of his Vice President it came under the presidency of his Democratic successor Bill Clinton. I oppose so called free trade agreements, I will repeal this so called welfare reform , and reinstate the New Deal  and for that Reason I am going to run for President (Cheers) , cause we need a Democratic President for the first time in 24 years.

Dennis Kucinich released why he was running in a press release and here it is

Kucinich: After 12 years of so called Centrist rule, we have gone further right in every area despite having a Democratic President. In the past 12 years this administration has passed corporate friendly trade agreements at expense of the people, has gutted welfare for poor people, has increased the prison population at a far greater rate then even Reagan/Bush did , and its time to reverse those policies and move America back to the left. That is why I am running for the presidency of the United States.

In light of the welfare reform and the India free trade agreement, I'd probably be inclined to support Feingold, even if I disagree with him on trade. Though, because Clinton is not running, I'd have to see where Gore or any of the other contenders stand.

Why would you oppose the India free trade agreement if you support free trade deals in general.

Senator John McCain and Governor George W Bush announce that they are running for President:

McCain: Thank You Thank You for the warm welcome. Today we stand here at a time where our country is facing many challenges both at home and abroad , and all I can say is that America will overcome those challenges (Applause). To do so as quickly and effectively as possible , we need to have a leader who enters the White House with the experience needed to solve those problems. We also need a leader who will always put the interests of our country  , over the interests of their political career and that is why I am running for President (Applause).

I have the experience needed to help us win the war on terror, and get legislation passed through congress what helps grow our economy. I also will never put my own political interests over what I believe is good for the country , and I will be willing to rebuke the special interest groups of my own party if that means making our country better(Applause).  People tell me that since I lost I cant run again, but what they forget is that 5 months before the election people said we would be lucky to get 200 electoral votes and by November we were one state away from winning the presidency, and the reason for that is that they know I wont put polls ahead of country. Thank You and May god bless America.

George W Bush Speech:

Bush : Thank You , Thank You. Today America is at a crossroads :where we have to decide if we want 4 more years of a president who puts polls over convictions , a President who continues to act tough in the war on terror, but in reality just makes the problem worse , and a President who believes that we should tax the American people more or do we want change. I am running for President because I am offering a change from the past 12 years and a return to the successful policies of Ronald Reagan and my father who inherited the worst economy since the depression and turned that into the greatest 20 year boom in our history. Over the past 12 years we have had a president who rode the tech bubble out in the 90s and now since the bubble has burst have left us with the worst economy since Reagan took office. Also I plan to reverse the current policy of acting tough , but not being really tough , as we will sternly tell Assad and Suddam that if they continue to be an adversary to our nation by directly helping our enemies who want to destroy us , that they will be removed from power . If we do that they will no longer be an enemy , just like Russia is no longer an enemy.

I also have the skills need to pass legislation as I have a record of bringing both sides together to pass education policy, crime policy, and economic policy and I believe we can do that in Washington where both sides have become way to adversarial to each and other. Just because I am a conservative does not mean that I do not believe in Bi Partisanship. The fact is the reason we dont have Bi Partisanship is that people are putting politics over convictions , and I will always put convictions first as that is the only way any meaningful legislation can pass. Thank You and May god Bless America

President Clinton speaks to his aide about candidates running so far(Private Conversation).

Clinton: We must be as united as possible as we cant let George W Bush or god forbid Newt Gingrich become President of the United States. Right now it looks like Former Vice President Al Gore and Senator Russ Feingold are on a path to having a very bitter , close and divisive primary. We cant let that happen, so I want to know which candidate can beat Feingold in Iowa .

Aide: Well right now Vice President Kerrey is losing to Feingold in Iowa, and so is Secretary of State Joe Lieberman , Attorney General Biden, and HHS Secretary Howard Dean.

Clinton: Well what about outside my admin

Aide: There is Gephardt who is even with Senator Feingold in Iowa polls

Clinton: Then we must hope he runs and takes Iowa as if Gephardt wins Iowa the primaries will be done by Super Tuesday.

Aide: Ok I will tell Gephardt that you are fine with him running .

Clinton : Thanks

Former Vice President Al Gore Announces Run for President

Al Gore: I want to thank all of you for coming today. Since our party took back control of the White House in 1993 , we have created more jobs in that time period then the Republicans did in the 12 years preceding Clinton. When President Clinton first proposed his economic plan, the Republicans laughed at it and said that plan would fail and would result in millions of jobs being lost. Well they were very wrong about it and the proof is in the numbers which show that we have created more jobs since we took back the White House than the Republicans did in the 12 years preceding us(Cheers). For 8 of those years I had the honor of serving you as your Vice President and President Clinton's top ally. We saw how much the GOP tried to stop us over and over again, and we both fought them off and won(Cheers) . Now while President Clinton is leaving Office , we still need a president who can keep his legacy in place, and that is why I am running for President (Cheers) as we need to continue his success to make our future even better. Thank You and May god Bless America

House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt announces his Run For President

Gephardt: Thank You , Thank You. After many months of consideration , I have decided that I will for President in 2004(Cheers) . While the President has had many successes since taking the white house, there is still work to be done. At home we face a stagnating economy which has made the life of an ordinary American harder , and overseas we face an Afghanistan which will still need to be rebuilt, and the Government of Syria who continues to help America's enemies. To solve those problems we need someone with experience , and I believe I am that person because I can get infrastructure investment bill through congress, and I do have the ability to deal with the Syrian Government.  Thank You and may god bless America

Former Speaker Newt Gingrich Announces Presidential Run:

Gingrich: Today we stand here today with America at a crossroads just like it was 9 years ago back in 1994. Back then I unveiled a contract with America, and we won on it despite every pundit in the media saying we would lose just like we did for the preceding 40 years. Not only did we win on that platform, we were able to force President Clinton too sign many pieces of legislation we said we would pass in the contract(Applause). In the mid - late 90s I got Clinton to sign Welfare Reform, Balanced Budget Act , cut the capital gains tax , and support tough on crime policies  . Due to those policies the Reagan economy was able to continue into the 1990s , but in 2000 the American people believed those were democratic ideas and rewarded them control of the white house and both houses of congress. Just like from 1977-1981, and 1993-95 the two previous times the Democrats resulted in disaster, incompetence and for the past two years Democratic economic policies have failed once Again. That is why I am running for President (Ovation) as we need to renew the contract with America, but go even further now : such as implementing a flat tax for anyone who has an income over 35,000 dollars, making sure welfare reform gets implemented fully, destroying our enemies overseas , and returning to a balanced budget an strong economy. Thank You can may god Bless out country .

Congressman Ron Paul gives out a statement why he is running:

Ron Paul: For decades upon decades the Democrats have supported more taxes and more regulations , a little less taxes and a little deregulation . So that means every time we have a Republican president it takes 8-12 years for government to grow smaller, then by then the democrats come back and dramatically grow government again. I am running for president as we need to abolish the income tax, deregulate the economy, and increase Liberty.

HHS Secretary Howard Dean announces Presidential Run:

Dean: Thank You , Thank you to everyone who came out here today. It's great to be back in Vermont, where I got to be your governor for 8 great years. One of the biggest regret I have for my tenure as Governor is how we were unable to guarantee that every Vermonter would have healthcare coverage. One of the reasons for that is that our state didnt have the money to be able to accomplish that goal, but our country as a whole as the money to accomplish that goal. Unfortunately despite having our country having the money needed to make sure everybody in our country has healthcare , we have failed to do so and that is why I am running for President(Applause).

Now while President Clinton tried admirably to accomplish this in 93 and 94 , he didnt run on it in 92 so he wasnt able to win the mandate required to pass such legislation . Every time a president was able to successfully make major changes , he did so because he won a mandate on the Issue during the campaign . FDR ran on a new deal for the American People , so when he won congress had to pass the New Deal legislation .LBJ ran on Medicare, Medicaid , and declaring a war on poverty , and when he won he got those passed. Ronald Reagan ran on tax cuts , deregulation , and an aggressive foreign policy and when he won he was able to tell the Democratic congress that I won on those issues , and that resulted in those passing. Similarly I will run on Universal Healthcare so when I become President Congress cant Obstruct me on this issue(Applause). Thank You and may god Bless America.

Senator Mary Landrieu announces Presidential Run

Landrieu: I want to thank all of you for coming today , and its great to be back here. After careful consideration I have decided that I will run for President(Applause). In this time where we are at war overseas and have a stagnating economy, we need someone who will unite the country to be successful . As President I will work with both Democrats and Republicans to grow our economy again , and win the war on terror . What I wont do is get involved in divisive issues , as talking about those issues do nothing but divide us . There are some issues which should be dealt to the states or to the people , and not the President. The issues what the President should deal with is reducing unemployment, reducing poverty, winning the war on terror , rebuilding our infrastructure and to do those things we need to come together in a bipartisan way and I have record of doing that. Thank You and may god bless America.
