Wow this is an utter disaster for the GOP and probably may lead to a repeat of the 1960s divisions after a close defeat

Yes, he always was. Though in actual 1976, he supported Ford over Reagan.

He kinda moderated past that too but probably cause someone who was to the right of him became president and reshaped the Overton window so he probably was moved into the moderate wing for that.

Makes sense here that he is not given Reagan lost

Same here. I wonder how OSR will do the primaries, since for obvious reasons, there's no schedule available in Wikipedia.

You mean President Johnson as this is his TL but there is a schedule for the 1984 Dem Primaries

I think Paul Laxalt would be good if he's anything like his grandson (future senator Adam Laxalt)

Paul Laxalt was way better than his grandson given that his grandson has not proven anything yet

Yah it’s over at this point as if Laxalt can’t win SC there is no way he has a chance at the nomination

It would really be the twist if it was liberal republicans being the realigners here rather than another era of new deal democrats

Ford 1979-1981, Brown 1981-1985, and Ford 1985-1989 seems inevitable.

He'd actually be eligible for another term in 1988 then, since he ascended to the presidency in May 1979 here, so after more than half of Rocky's second term has passed.

Yes but he'd also be 75 and he was never the Nixonian type who really, really wanted the job.

Ford would only be two years older than Reagan was in his 2nd term
