I don't think LBJ could have stopped Nixon from convincing the South Vietnamese to hold off for better terms.  LBJ would have probably been able to keep the nomination from McCarthy, though if Bobby Kennedy survives the campaign he wins the nomination. LBJ does slightly worse overall than Humphrey did in the general.
