Even if people knew the finer details, they wouldn't still care. They would still probably back the CIA, because they see the detained as foreigners. That would be the wrong thing to do, but that's how most Americans view the situation.
But truth be told, there are people in Guantanamo Bay who probably do deserve rectal feeding and torture. Because they are actual terrorists. They should be made to suffer - I have no reservations about this - because they deliberately aid and abet terrorist attacks on innocents, here and in the Middle East. And we forget that while there are innocents in Guantanamo Bay (who should be richly compensated for their suffering and apologized to profusely), we forget that real evil lies in that detention center. And they should not be sympathized or pitied for their suffering (or mind you, given a court of law). Let's counter this view of America being a terrible nation for torturing with the fact that evil men and women do live there and they are detained there because of their posed threat against the United States and humanity.
That said, from a practical viewpoint, torture is not efficient to gather information. If I thought it was an efficient way to gather information, I would wholeheartedly endorse it. It is, however, a highly inefficient way to gather information. You get flawed information, because the tortured would tell you anything he wants to. It's better to go through other tactics to coerce information out of them.
