Does iodine really do anything? I know what it's supposed to do but this seems more like an anti-panic measure than anything.

It does help block radiation in the thyroid.  However, they are now reporting several hundred cases of "sickness" on Fox.
But does it do more for radiation than that?  It seems like radiation can damage more than the thyroid?

The key thing right now is to not believe what any of the official types are telling you.

Not that it really matters, since we're not in Japan (prayers for anyone who is), but that's the main fact to remember.

A cnn or bbc article implied that the Japanese have a tendency to cover up issues with their nuclear power plants....I guess this is what you're getting at.

R.E.M. said this would start with an earthquake.

And I feel fine.

Well nuclear power obviously is unsafe. Ask the people in Fukushima if they think they're safe.

Well...sure.  I think the more appropriate question is, as a function of the likeliness of a major problem occurring and the danger of the public stemming from the operation of a plant/plant suffering an accident/disaster...how much more unsafe is it compared to other alternatives...if you want to factor in general cost and/or cost to fix said problem...fine...but that seems to be the necessary question.

looks like Japs and anything nuclear, whether it be bombs or reactors, just don't mix.  nor do earthquakes and Japs.  nor do waves and Japs....ENOUGH ALREADY....they should just start Kamikaze-ing themselves into these reactors, might as well die with some dignity instead of just looking helpless while your whole country unravels around you in front of the whole world.

And all you had recently was carrots with ranch dressing eh?

Radiation increasing.  All workers evacuated.  Japanese government - Fox

This has to be a full meltdown.

What can be done?  Dump stuff from above (via heliocopter?)

japan is a very close friend...if we're not willing to intervene when our friend's house is on fire, then we are a sorry group of people

Framed that way...sure.  I dont think youll find many that would disagree...assuming we as the neighbor have the power to do any good...which we do.  I think.  I hope.

Arguably it, initially, could have been framed, at the crucial points during the onset of the crisis, that this was a more internal matter...ie the smiths next door have trouble with their finances...is it our place to offer help...would it be too embarassing for them if we offered help...etc so forth.

No, a better analogy would be the neighbor’s have a corner of their roof on fire and are too proud to ask for help in putting it out.  You should realize the fire has the potential to engulf their entire house and ignore their pride.

At this point you'd probably want to toss in the whole...fire on their roof...could jump to your house etc.

Yeah, apocalypse would appear to be cancelled. Of course, with 18,000 presumed dead, what actually happened is bad enough.

Didn't you get the memo?  The apocalypse is on schedule.

CNN Breaking News:

Japanese nuclear agency "provisionally" raises the threat level from a stricken power plant from 5 to 7, the most severe category.

The 1986 Chernobyl accident in the former Soviet Union also rated a 7 on the International Nuclear Events Scale, which equates to a "major release of radioactive material with widespread health and environmental effects requiring implementation of planned and extended countermeasures."

A Japanese official says the release of radiation at the Fukushima Daiichi plant is about 10% of what was emitted at Chernobyl.
