I don't see why it would change anything. People are drawn to Evangelicalism because of its current politics, not in spite of it.

This is only true if you equate evangelicalism with a specific brand of theological conservatism.  BRTD's presumably non-denominational church identifies itself as evangelical and is very liberal.
