There were reports of people who didn't realize who was behind the rally who were at the rally, that's what Trump was talking about when he said that there were very fine people on both sides.
Even if there were only Nazis at the rally, it's probable that Trump was speaking from ignorance and that he thought there were non-Nazis there.
If Trump had actually said that Nazis were very fine people, it would have been played in commercials every day during the election season and Trump would have lost every single state.
