but it's not because Oklahoma is somehow lagging behind the rest of the nation.

Actually, it is, in almost every possible statistic.

I was tempted to dig into a bunch of statistics to prove you wrong (gun ownership, animal-to-person ratio, etc.) but it was way too much work Smiley

Why would you stay home tomorrow when you have no fever! Is this seriously how you live your life?

Just to make sure it's all gone and to make sure I have enough strength for Monday, because I'll probably be working 6 days this week, and probably 6 days a week for most of the month of September.

I'm not sure if that's exactly how a sickness works.

The lady started off acting like she would be an easy drop (easy sell), but then she turned sarcastic saying that she actually liked the dirt in her son's mattress.  Then, she kicked me to the curb in the pouring rain.  Oh well.  Shake the dust off my feet and get back at 'em tomorrow!!

Have you thought about selling some to your family, like you did with Ameriplan?

You're a horrible person

Joe posted the link in the vacuum thread, but university professors call Bushie's new job "a textbook example of unconscionability"

Lol at finding a more evil product than AmeriPlan to sell to people!

I already predicted this will end up with Bushie working as a drug mule for a Mexican cartel.  I stand by that.

For a Christian, he certainly has no problem entering exploitation scheme after exploitation scheme.  I mean, I couldn't sleep at night selling such things.

I was a salesman. Security systems.

Went in and they told us that this is what we'd be doing. Gave us 2 days of training, no pay of course. Still don't know how they managed that. Then the sent us out.

The "training" was more like a sales session. They went on about how rich we could become. "Work hard, play hard" was the slogan. Trips to cuba etc.

I asked a lot of questions. They said that you'd make a base salary, guaranteed... if you made it into 48 houses in your first month. If you did not make it into 48 houses in your first month that they'd probably not have much use for you, and, prob let you go. If you did make it into 40 houses, you *should* sell 14 units, and if you did sell 14 units, you would make that base anyway. In short, after asking enough questions, I got the idea that they'd never pay anyone the base, that if you sold, you made it anyway, if you didn't sell, they'd let you go. The 2 in 7 rule was pretty common.

On the last training day I was the only one who had memorized the script. They introduced us to the existing staff... There were about a dozen of us who had just finished training... and the entire existing staff was about a dozen and a half people. I was the only "newbie" that had memorized the script.

On our first day they sent us out in a minivan to some part of Brampton. The drivers were effing insane!!!!! Throwing cig packs back and forth to the vehicles while flying down the highway and speeding.

When we got to our area, they'd send us out and we'd knock on doors. If we got into the house, we'd call the guy in the van and he'd come and wrap up the sale.

I got into a house of a lady that didn't know english very well. used her washroom and she gave me a glass of water. Later on, I got into another house of a french guy. He bought a system. The boss (van guy) was extremely impressed with me. He said only 4 other people had sold on their first day, and proceeded to list the names of the 4 van drivers. I believe him.

Me and another guy (a 40 year old immigrant with a family and a mortgage) did our little area and waited for the van. He had to use the washroom - he had not gone all day. I held his stuff while he ran to the nearby store.

It hit me while I was standing there watching him run to the store that this is not the kind of job I want.

I never went back. They prob still have my $186 cheque for commissions sitting on their desk. I don't plan on ever going to get it.

See, now, security systems I can understand.  You even have a great "in."  Want people like me to stop harrassing you?  Buy my product!

During training, Don told us there would be $1,600 guaranteed base salary a month and I only had to do 48 demos a month to get that.  He said I would be paid weekly on the sales I produce and that at the end of the month, if my sales didn’t add up to $1,600, I would be cut a check for the difference.  If my sales were over $1,600, then I wouldn’t get any of the base.  He also said that on average, a new person receives $150 per Kirby sold, all the way up to $500 if sold at full price ($2,869).

On average, $150 per sale?

I do have a contract and I did look over everything they put forth in that contract before I signed it.  It said everything that I mentioned above, $1,600 a month base for 48 demos regardless of units sold.  Like I said, 48 demos is not an impossible number.

It's good that your salary isn't based on a prerequisite that "is not impossible" to achieve.  Oh wait...

That's only 12 demos a week roughly and I've got 4 so far in the first three days.

Do you see what's wrong with that sentence?

There are still 4 days left in the week - Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  It's very achievable.  Plus, I'm brand new, so of course my numbers will be lower.  Most people have about 6 or 7 demos right now.

So...

1)  you're on track for not getting paid $1,600 this month.  Enjoy that.

2) Most people, with far more experience, are BARELY on track for getting paid this month, as 6 is basically the minimum required amount of demos every 3 days (with Sundays off) to get a paycehck.

We'd have to see the contract to know the deets, but he's certainly an independent contractor and not a salaried employee...I'm not sure how that works, in Oklahoma or elsewhere.  Can you write a contract that says "You build me one table I can jump on a week, I'll pay you $1,000, but if it breaks when I jump on it, you get nothing" ?

And if you fail to reach the quota you don't get paid less, you don't get paid AT ALL. It's possible to work 12 hour days 6 days a week at this job and NOT get paid. Quite frankly I am amazed that that is even legal.

Its legal if your intellectually bankrupt enough to sign saying it was ok, which is exactly what Bushie did.

Anyway for awhile I felt kind of bad for Bushie, now I don't.  He deserves everything single thing that has happened and will happen.

I don't think you can sign away your right to the minimum wage?

Good question.  Is his contract actually written such that if he shows 47 units rather than 48, and makes zero sales, he gets paid $0 for those hundreds of hours of work?  If so, that's rather incredible.

I'm sure he gets to keep his commissions no matter what.

Even if his manager is the one who gets to close the deal? You really think he's going to be able to sell one?

I only said he gets to keep his commissions, not that he'll get any.  I'm sure he'll get to close with one or two of his relatives.

Okay, if the next job is also a scam, I'm going to conclude in my head that Bushie is a fake poster and be done with this conundrum

It is official, at 9:00 this morning, I am going to go into the office and turn in my demo kit and shake hands telling them thanks, but no thanks and then turn around and come home and relax the rest of the day.  The job search will resume on Tuesday.

Typically, for the unemployed, it's ideal to keep searching past 9am in the morning

Normally, I would, but my mother and dad both said that I've been working myself pretty hard the past 10 days and I need to chance to breathe.  Couple that with the holiday weekend, they're thinking I would have better response from employers on Tuesday after a long weekend than I would today before a long weekend, when a lot of employers and hiring reps may be taking a 4-day weekend.

Oh, absolutely, if anything Wednesday morning or late Tuesday afternoon could yield higher response rates as they'll have a lot of things piling up in their email inbox after a long weekend.  But that doesn't mean you should quit the "search" during the weekend.

You need some marijuana.

Or at least some St. John's Wart.

When I saw the name "Dave Leip" on my thread, I thought, "Oh Crap!!!  What did I do?!?!?!?"  Then, I remembered that his name is spelled Liep, not Leip.

wtf?
