"I'm saddened but not surprised that Sam Yorty has decided to leave the party. Early on in this campaign, I made it clear that Sam Yorty was no Democrat, and that's especially apparent today. He endorsed Nixon in 1960, and he's well on his way to endorsing him again. I ask, today, that supporters of Mayor Yorty recognize their importance in our party. Just because Sam Yorty left the Democratic Party certainly should not mean you leave. I ask, look at our record. We've always stood with the unions, the working man, the plumber, and the farmer. I know this fact quite well, which is why I'm a Democrat and always have been."
