I can tell you from experience that "difficult" languages often earn an unfair reputation. I found Mandarin easier than French. The beginning is the hardest part, since you have to adjust to a completely different system (tones, characters, etc.) However, I found it to be pretty smooth sailing after the first two months or so.
My suggestion would be to learn the language which you will have the most personal investment in. Any language will have its share of difficulties, and your own motivation is what will help you power through those difficulties.
