Washington taking up arms again?

I remember hearing this somewhere, but I can't find it on the Internet. In the event that the British came back, which they obviously did but a little too late, was President Washington prepared to take up arms again himself and resume his position of General? Would he have kept his word if they retaliated in his lifetime?
