Hubbell lost because of the "urban vs. rural" mentality that exists in Iowa. Rural Iowans HATE the Des Moines area and other urban areas. I've witnessed first-hand this whole, "rural Iowa is better" mentality. A businessman from Des Moines could not have exemplified this more.
I personally voted for John Norris in the Democratic primary. He was from a rural area and a lot of older Iowans really liked him.
His loss wasn't a shock - the contest was barely ever polled.
