Freudian slip.  He said that he "could care less" about the election, rather than "couldn't care less".  That means that he actually does care about the election quite a bit.

Makes me wonder- if Romney chose Christie, what would Christie be doing differently right now?

He wouldn't be governor right now if Romney had picked him.  Romney wanted Christie to agree to resign as governor if picked as his running mate:

That's why Christie asked to be taken off the shortlist.  He wouldn't agree to resign his governorship if Romney picked him, because then he'd be out of office if the Romney/Christie ticket lost.
