I moved to Perth a few months ago, and from Dec. 9 - Jan. 8, I had my first out of state trip since moving here, which involved (for work purposes) trips to Sydney and Melbourne, and then a ~2.5 week trip to the USA to visit family for the holidays.  Watched quite a few movies in both cinemas and airplanes.  I think this is the complete list:

Safety Not Guaranteed
Robot & Frank
Inglourious Basterds
Moonrise Kingdom
True Grit
Hugo
The Hobbit
Elf*
Lincoln
Django Unchained
Love Affair
Les Miserables
Argo
Jack Reacher
Love
The Big Sleep
Ruby Sparks
Toy Story
Beasts of the Southern Wild

* Elf is the only one of those that I'd already seen before.

"Love" (about an astronaut alone on the ISS who loses contact with Earth) was by far the strangest of the bunch.

Star Trek Into Darkness

OK, I guess.  Would have been better if there weren't so many plot holes.

Ftr, I like some of Polanski's movies, but obvioiusly find him to be an awful person.  I think the long time that has passed since he first became a fugitive make his actions worse, not better, for reasons I explained three years ago in this post:

Rather, people say it's time to end it and get beyond it because it was so long ago.

If he'd served his time, and had been out of jail for some time now, had gotten back to making movies....then fine, his crime was awful, but he paid the price for it, and it's in the past now.

But of course, he didn't pay the price for it.  He became a fugitive, and avoided serving jail time when he should have, when he was in the prime of his life.  Sorry, but no free pass for "it was a long time ago" if you never actually faced the music for your crime.

The Conversation (1974)

Possibly the most seventies film ever. And I mean that (mostly) in a good way.

Yeah, that's a good one.  I like how Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas used all the same actors in their 1970s movies.  Seeing Harrison Ford pre-Star Wars is always a hoot:

Gravity

Pretty impressive, if I may say so.

Edge of Tomorrow

Despite the fact that its premise is not the most original one (basically Starship Troopers meets Groundhog Day), it is a surprisingly decent sci-fi film.

The time-loop concept must have been done a thousand times (no pun intended Tongue ) in science fiction, but this film still manages to tell a compelling story.

I'm really surprised how strong the reviews are for this. I personally have no interest in seeing it myself though.

The reviews were also very good for Looper, and I found it to be pretty mediocre.  I'll probably see Edge of Tomorrow next weekend, and have an open mind about it.  But yeah, I can sometimes end up being harsh on movies whose time travel logic is poor, but I'll have to wait and see how Edge of Tomorrow handles that.

None of them use time travel logic that measures up to Hobo Orgy Guy & Blondie though (shameless plug).

OK, yeah, I just watched "Edge of Tomorrow".  Not a bad movie, though the movie it reminded me of most was actually "Source Code", and I liked that one better.
