Why would they poll Bachman but not one of the many other serious candidates?

They always poll Gingrich/Huckabee/Palin/Romney, plus a "wildcard" pick.  The wildcard pick is usually decided by a web poll that PPP puts on its website.  This month people opted for Bachmann in the web poll.

favorable / unfavorables among all voters:

Huckabee 37 / 38%
Palin 35 / 58%
Gingrich 31 / 52%
Romney 36 / 40%
Bachmann 22 / 31%

among Republicans only:

Huckabee 60 / 17%
Palin 59 / 32%
Gingrich 55 / 26%
Romney 50 / 30%
Bachmann 30 / 16%

Also, Palin trails Obama among women by 30 points, but among men by only 5 points, which is a larger gender gap than for any of the other candidates.  And, despite being behind among all voters, Gingrich, Huckabee, Palin and Romney all lead Obama among voters over 65 years old.  Bachmann, on the other hand, trails Obama among all age groups.
