Kasich probably saw that such a deal would fall apart. No way Trump would ever follow through on giving up so much power, and if he did, he'd certainly take all the credit. Pretty thankless.

Yeah, I don't get anyone saying it would run afoul the Constitution.

 A President can completely shut out a Vice President, and it's fine. The complete opposite could also happen - the President could let the VP meet with Congress, send initiatives to them, do all the heavy lifting, and as long as the President is the one who signs the bill as a by-product of such work by the VP,  it's a-okay. Just a different management style.
