No Democrat was elected president while losing these states:



And no Republican was elected president while losing these states:



There really was a lack of close elections in the 20th century, and the closest elections were Democrat victories (Wilson in 1916, Kennedy in 1960, and Carter in 1976).

'68 went to Nixon.

For some reason I didn't think of 1968 as particularly close.

For some reason I didn't think of 1968 as particularly close.

In your defense, as a head-to-head 1968 wouldn’t have been close because it’s clear that the bulk of Wallace’s supporters would have voted for Nixon over Humphrey

Yeah, I feel like a lot of Wallace supporters would have stayed home before voting for Humphrey if he wasn't on the ballot.
