1968 is unparalleled among modern elections.  January, McCarthy's strong showing; mid-March, RFK shocks everyone by jumping in; late March, LBJ stuns the world by declining to run; days later, MLK assassinated; June 5, RFK gets crucial win in California and is promptly shot and dies a day later; at Dem convention, open war on the streets on Chicago...  goes on and on.

Yeah you're right, I'm embarrassed I didn't mention 1968. It's by far the craziest.

also occurring in that period from March to July 1968 were unrest both in France and Mexico City, as well as in Prague on the Soviet side of the curtain.  for just a moment the very ground of the World order was shaking.
