I have long called for this...

The IRS needs to be at least doubled in size. They don't have the time or resources to pursue anything but the lowest-hanging fruit right now.

If you compare the headcount of the IRS with the headcount of other countries' revenue departments, it is clear the IRS is almost comically undersized, especially considering the byzantine US tax code. This leads to nonexistent customer service, errors, loss of revenue and cheaters getting away with murder.

Even if the IRS "went after the little guy", that would be okay, because even the little guy is obligated to follow the law. But the GOP doesn't care about the law.

The only way you can logically justify not expanding IRS headcount is if you think the IRS is doing such a great job that it doesn't need more resources. I don't think anyone, no matter their politics, thinks that is the case.

If you think the tax code is broken, you fix the tax code. The IRS only exists to administer the tax system the legislative branch created.

"The law is broken and hard to understand so we shouldn't even try to enforce it"

Yeah... I don't see this attack resonating with normal people

TBF, most Americans literally don't pay federal income tax.
