I was going to make my usual one-liner, but I won't, because the possibility of it being true is just so demented and sad on so many levels. It's not even a patriotism thing - we all knew Trump is a traitor, the literal opposite of a patriot - it's more about the complete and utter lack of humanity.

Ummm...this can't possibly be real....is it?Huh
With any other President, no matter how cynical or corrupt, I would not even entertain the possibility. But the fact that this is even remotely believable says everything you need to know about Trump.

Can one of you geniuses who are calling it outright fake news (not just "not sure") explain to me why the Editor-in-Chief of The Atlantic - a pretty decent job - would stake his entire professional reputation on something pulled right out of his ass?

As I've said many times before, there are so many legitimate things to attack Trump on, that there is no need to make anything up. Sometimes the news media, which I fully acknowledge generally has a visceral dislike of Trump, takes unprofessional shortcuts to get anti-Trump stories out, but it's extremely rare for someone to just make sh**t up, especially in this kind of way.

Trump has shown nothing but respect to the troops. McCain attacked him first, and being a 'war hero' doesn't put you above criticism. Also, telling the enemy all of our secrets as McCain did, makes him much less than a war hero. And you still have not shown any evidence.

Trump has shown more respect to neo-Nazis than the US military. Look at how he treated the generals who advised him, and what they all think of him now. If he thinks so little of the most experienced officers, think of how poorly he regards junior officers and enlisted soldiers?

I have veteran friends on FB, who have not posted anything in years, sharing this story.

Let there be no question now that Trump is the worst President in US history.

Jeffrey Goldberg? No thanks. He is a neocon-lite and this story slogs on about "the honor and respect and dignity" of U.S. troops getting sent off to die in a pointless war in Europe.

"I don’t get it. What was in it for them?" Exactly.
What exactly are you trying to say?

Never blame soldiers for their leaders' mistakes or lack of vision, regardless of which flag they wear on their uniform.

If you just don't care, fair enough, but it takes a real dumbass to continuing denying this happened when even Fox News says it did.

Then tell the people who heard it to come out of the shadows. Over 50% of the country is behind them, a good chunk, perhaps even a majority of the military is as well. If they truly want to get the man out of office they'll come forward. Otherwise, it's just a rumor no matter how many networks report it, and it won't change a thing.

Considering how many highly armed, conspiratorial nutjobs support Trump, I would be very concerned about coming out as a source if I were one.

Why would Bolton lie about this ?    It certainly wouldn't have helped him sell books to keep this out if it were true.

Trump and McCain were feuding with words, and Trump being vindictive, he attacked McCain's status as a war hero.  The stuff about McCain is awful but Trump doesn't have the same reason to attack someone who died in war 100 years ago, so to believe he is actively disrespecting them requires a higher bar of evidence.

Bolton's account doesn't contradict The Atlantic's reporting, though. It is possible for there to have both been scheduling challenges due to bad weather, and for Trump to have called dead soldiers losers.

Bolton's account directly contradicts the reason The Atlantic gives for why the trip was cancelled.
The stated reason, which was made clear at the time the trip was cancelled, was bad weather. Nothing in The Atlantic's report says otherwise.

He STILL can't get John McCain out of his head.

McCain got under Trump's skin in a lasting way, a way that very few other figures Trump has lashed out at have managed. (Obama himself perhaps is the only other big example.) I don't know enough about McCain to speculate on why, exactly, but maybe it has to do with repudiation from someone who was seen as a national hero even by people who disliked him.

Something like that. Trump is angry that people could have such great respect for someone who he thinks is a loser who got captured and didn't even leave when he got a chance. The only pursuit he views as worthwhile is money.

("WX" stands for "weather")

Nobody is questioning the inability to fly, and John Bolton's statement that flying in combat vs flying a dignitary are two very different missions is absolutely right. The Atlantic article focuses on Trump's disgraceful alleged comments, not the official reason for the cancellation.

I actually looked up the historical METARs (hourly weather reports, not forecasts) that day for Orly airport, and they absolutely back up that they couldn't have flown that day. The weather reports all day showed light rain and ranged between broken (5/8+ of the sky) and overcast (8/8 of the sky) cloud cover at 600-1100 ft. Very marginal conditions, at best. Plus, we have the power of hindsight, whereas the Marines had to make a judgment call based on available information at the time. Sure, Marines could have flown in that weather, but that's in combat or emergency situations.

So yeah, Goldberg was wrong in all but the most literal sense when he said the helicopter could fly. I must've slightly misread that part the first time. But that doesn't invalidate the rest of the story.

This doesn't bode well for Trump's support among military families:

TBF, Joe would always have the edge because Beau served in Iraq. (of course, Hunter had a rather ignominious military "career", but that's not really on Joe)

I don't know if that's true. I suspect most Americans don't really know who Beau Biden is beyond "Joe Biden's son who died."
Sorry, I misread the poll to be of military members, not the general public.
