It would definitely have been superior if they had used the version of the song from the West End 10th anniversary performance.

I think Boublil, Schonberg and Mackintosh (for it was the latter who was really responsible for creating the Les Mis familiar to English speaking audiences) were more concerned with making an entertaining, profitable musical when they created 'Do You Hear the People Sing' than with promoting 'social reform'. I mean, with a couple of tweaks, the song could literally be purposed to just about any situation, its lyrics are so general.
