Why did Trump want all those documents in the first place? Either it's because he wanted to have them as some sort of mementos or trophies, which would be stupidly childish or he wanted to have them as assets, which would be brazenly callous towards his own country even by his own standards.

My personal theory is just that he was convinced he'd be made president again in a matter of months, if not weeks, and didn't want Biden to have them in the meantime.

This would be beyond stupid because there's no legal mechanism to "reinstate" him before Biden's term is up. Anyone who ever held the office president should be aware of this. It's not how the constitution and laws work.

Where are the nationwide protests? I was told that indicting TFG would tear the nation apart and cause massive outrage. Right now it looks like a couple hundred people milling around in front of the courthouse, half of them media.

There are also some protesters with "lock him up" signs and "Trump is not above the law".

I'm stunned. Maybe it will be delayed, but this is could be a huge win to get this trial in before the election.

But only when he's actually found guilty? The chances seem relatively high, don't they, given it's a very detailed and serious indictment. Even conservative lawyers such as Bill Barr or Chris Christie concluded this. Trump could still appeal a guilty verdict though, I assume, and this would under no circumstance occur before the election?

If Trump somehow is acquited by jury before the election, it would be a massive boost for his campaign.

Imagine being that stupid to order a staffer deleting security cam footage and seriously believe the FBI won't discover it. If Trump at least was a Frank Underwood type criminal who makes sure he's not caught that easily, but he really doesn't even try. What Trump did is ten times worse than Hillary between the blatant mishandling of serious classified information along with the absurd levels of obstruction. The argument of it being a double standard is disingenuous rw hackery

Imagine traveling back to 2015/16 when Hillary's e-mails were a thing for Republicans, only replace the name "Donald J. Trump" with "Barack H. Obama" in the original papers (investigations and indictment) and tell Republicans you're a time traveler from a few years when a former president (supposedly Obama) was indictment over taking classified documents and refusing to cooperate with law enforcement. How would Republicans react?

Spoiler: They would have called for punishments I don't feel comfortable writing down here.

I think any attempt to amend the law would have be widely bipartisan for it to be politically feasible. And maybe at some point it will be, who knows. But I think the argument has been made that it's entirely possible for the Secret Service to protect him at a prison somewhere. Granted there's disagreement on that point.

Nothing needs to be amended in order for Trump to go to prison. Contrary to what some believe, the Secret Service does have the authority to override criminal law and somehow veto a prison sentence.

Wouldn't Trump at least be be held custody in a different part of the prison, separated from ordinary inmates? I think that has been done with other high-profile fellons as well. Especially as a safety measure, as he (or any famous prisoner) would be at risk.

Special counsel Jack Smith again seeks Trump gag order in classified documents case

Special counsel Jack Smith has once again asked the federal judge overseeing the classified documents case against Donald Trump to impose a gag order against the former president, barring him from making statements about the law enforcement officers who searched his Mar-a-Lago resort.

The gag order request is focused on false or misleading statements Trump has made about the 2022 search of Mar-a-Lago, including that his life was in danger because of a policy in place around the use of deadly force during the search.

Prosecutors say Trump’s comments in recent weeks have “endangered law enforcement officers involved in the investigation and prosecution of this case and threatened the integrity of these proceedings.”
