More blue states should elect republicans and more red states should elect democrats .

This. That's also why there should be far more competitive House districts drawn by a nonpartisan commission. With more competitive races, politicians tend to play for the center and not the ideological extremes. If you're in a Titanium blue or red seat, there's all too often not much benefit from working with the other side, while you have to be worried about a primary challenger from the far-right or far-left. Since politicians want to be reelected, they consequently move away from the center to avoid a primary challenger.
