Greg Abbott (R) succeeds fellow GOPer Rick Perry as Texas' 48th Governor on January 20, 2015. Abbott won the open seat over State Senator Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) by double digits: 62-37.
*In 2018, Abbott wins re-election by another landslide over San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro (D): 65-33
*During his 2nd term, Abbott considers but declines offers to run for either US Senator (assuming Cornyn retires) or the Presidency.
*In 2022 and 2026, he wins re-election to a 3rd and 4th term and stays in office until January 21, 2031 with a total of 16 years of service, breaking Perry's 14-year record.
