Gonna have to disagree on Lott not deserving the criticism he got. First, let's look at the quote: "When Strom Thurmond ran for president, we voted for him. We’re proud of it. And if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn't have had all these problems over the years, either." So he's saying that if the country had elected someone who, at the time, was openly and unapolagetically racist, then things would be "better" (presumably for whites only) than the reality where the country elected people who were supportive or at the very least ambivalent towards racial integration. That's pretty damning and rightfully disqualifies himself from public office. Sure, Tea Partiers today say stupid and racist stuff, and they are rightfully criticized as well, but that doesn't excuse what Lott said by any means.
