He could theoretically just separately fundraise both for his campaign and legal fees but that's still a drain on campaign funds and for the party at large.
Honestly though the RNC paying Trump's legal fees to begin with is already pretty laughable and contrary to their supposed purpose, as Trump isn't even a Republican office holder now. But not surprising.
