What exactly is the difference between a suburb and a exburb? The second phrase is kind of new to me.
Suburbs are right next to the city proper and the small communities that basically sprouted up around the city because of it. Exurbs are small somewhat rural communities quite a few miles away from the city proper and core area, that haven't been reached by sprawl yet, although they can in time. I actually wanted to delete that Bush's column, it was by error it remained, since exurbs are often considered rural. For example: Scott County. It's a horrible suburban sprawl county that I absolutely loathe that I pass through while driving to the Twin Cities. The north side of the county is full of suburban hell communities like Shakopee and Savage. But the south side of the county is rather rural, and I can actually often smell cow manure when I see the sign that says I'm entering the county. I then pass through a few exurban towns like Belle Plaine and Jordan.
