There Will be Blood.

I did not like the songs. The melody, singing and lyrics were all very bad. Otherwise it was okay.

WTF? Are you thinking of another movie that's actually a musical?

I also have no clue why the hell that movie was rated R. Even the violence scenes didn't show any significant amount of blood or anything.

Let the Right One In

Meh. Kind of boring.

Side note: Why are all these non-artsy people going to Benjamin Button? My parents went to it on Christmas too. It seemed like it was aimed at only hipsters, movie critics and "intellectuals".

Sorry, but movies starring Brad Pitt are never aimed at hipsters, movie critics and intellectuals. Tongue

Frost/Nixon.

This was an interesting one. Not a total hit piece on Nixon (Not that any sane would expect it to be, but many conservatives jumped to the conclusion it was). A lot more going on than you would expect. The only thing bugged me was the pseudo-documentary commentary from some of the characters like they were being interviewed by the news, yes its a docu-drama, but they're still actors just playing characters.

The Wrestler

It could be the year's best. Amazing film.

Did you go to NYC to see it?

Hamlet 2.

Kind of hit and miss. More often hilarious than it was stupid, but there was a still a fair amount of the latter.

It was both quite frequently.

The Corporation.

Wow, absolutely fantastic. This documentary does a better job of making its point than any I've ever seen and does an excellent job of making even its occasionally dry subject matter interesting and compelling.

There Will Be Blood

No problems with the acting (both Day-Lewis and Dano are very capable) or the cinematography or the direction or whatnot. But...I don't 'get it'. What was the point of the story?

It's a character study. It's not supposed to have only one simplistic plot coming to an easy conclusion.

I don't recall ever asking for simplistic plots and easy conclusions.

I just don't see why this story merited telling. Why is Plainview's story worthy of a big screen adaptation? I didn't feel the story was particularly entertaining or that there was a great deal to learn from it.

(This isn't to say that I'm trying to convince you of my point of view, art's meaning after all can only be really interpreted by each individual. I'm just saying, I didn't see the point of this particular film.)

It's loosely based on the Upton Sinclair novel "Oil!", though the novel focuses mostly on the son. PTA thought it would be interesting to adapt the story but do it from another perspective.

Transsiberian.

It was pretty good, not a must see or anything but there are much worse ways to spend 2 hours. I don't get the Hitchcock comparison though, it was a pretty flat film, hardly any real plot twists or anything like that.

I just rented The Onion Movie from Blockbuster. Best part, by far, was the Britney Spears parody.

That movie was quite weak and hardly Onion-esque at all. The only really Onion-esque thing was the "Government's plan to reduce obesity"

Doubt, and like when I saw Bolt, I was the ONLY one in the movie theater - VERY depressing!!!!

Do you mostly go to matinees or something?

There's barely anything worth seeing until then anyway. The only movie in the next couple months I want to see is The International. The rest is all Bride Wars and crap.

Watchmen is only two months away.

Graphic novel was too boring for me to bother reading too far into it so the movie doesn't interest me much.

And the trailers aren't interesting either.

Also, as said before, it's a loose adaption of an Upton Sinclair novel and it's not really a "Hollywood" film either.

I disagree with Gustaf's interpretation of Plainview though, I see him as evil, just unlike your typical movie villain in that he possesses some redeeming characteristics, just a mirror image of the flawed but generally noble hero character really. I never found him likable, or even preferable to Eli. Maybe my view of Eli was tainted by the trailer where he's seen as somewhat noble though. But really nothing Eli did amounted to all the murder and deceit of Daniel. He even admits at the end he only adopted the boy to help him on business deals. Really he was halfway to being a sociopath, just only halfway.

I want to see Gran Torino.  And I may go see The Spirit with my friend.

Why would you go see The Spirit? By all accounts it's horrible.

Body double. Not worth $10.

The Wackness.

OK this had a lot of potential, but eh. It had no real plot and had a tough job holding interest. I found the psychologist character annoying and overused. Also the ending seemed like a complete ripoff of Juno, I really wonder if that was a just a coincidence (It even starred the girl who played Juno's friend.)

I watched The Squid and the Whale again. Fuck that movie is brilliant.

I really hated the dad this time for some reason. What a dick.

Have you seen Margot at the Wedding? Very good as well. And pretty similar. Noah Baumbach must have had a hell of a twisted childhood.

It's on my Netflix queue. I've heard it's not very good though.

And I'm most likely seeing The Wrestler tommorow.

The Wrestler.

Wow. I thought this was actually much harsher than Requiem for a Dream. But damn, what a piece of filmmaking.

My advice: Go rent something a bit lighter and happier, go see it, and then watch the movie you rented right after it.

I found out one of my co-workers' brother was in Gran Torino (playing one of the Hmong gangsters.) Pretty cool.

Slumdog Millionaire was great. I lol'd at the credits though.

It's playing in Idaho? Must be going wide.
