So (he asked with trepidation ), what's the theory?

So I was at a mewithoutYou show and I saw people texting on iPhones everywhere. And I was thinking "Ugh Christian scene people, you are right about just about everything, why can't you use good Android phones like most of my atheist friends do for f[inks] sake?" At least they were drinking good beer.

Weirdly though, this poll shows the OPPOSITE correlation.

Did you really think folks like me would have an iPhone? Tongue

I work for a cell carrier, so I'm actually pretty familiar with the type of people who really do use certain types of phones instead of just the stereotypes. The "hipsters use iPhones" idea is more a stereotype than reality. Not that it doesn't have any basis in reality of course, but it did a lot more in the past than it does today, where iPhones have become the default beginner smartphone for non-tech savvy folks, and exactly what some grandmother will get to try to state up to date with this technology stuff. The facts that: 1-The objectively best phones on the market by most measures are Android, 2-Android is the much preferred option for people who are very tech literate and want to be able to customize their phone and use it the way they want instead of being dictated by a company and 3-that iPhones are extremely mainstream today means that yes plenty of hipsters are now going Android. iPhones are kind of like Facebook, in that they're something your parents are likely to use now and thus think they are hip.

Actually this is basically a bell distribution in terms of age, teenagers, college students and olds are likely to have iPhones, but 20s/30s people tend to lean Android. So yeah people like you I would expect to have an iPhone (not you personally though of course).

Anecdote time: One of my Ingress friends is a gay guy one year younger than me who lives in the Lowry Hill neighborhood of Minneapolis, so he fits the stereotype of that part of Minneapolis pretty well. However his current job is a systems engineer for a bank, and was assigned an iPhone as a work phone because Androids weren't considered secure enough. After updating his personal phone he started having issues and was using his iPhone to play Ingress until he did a full reboot. During this time people started joking about how if they could get a clear picture of him using the iPhone taken it was going on Facebook as sort of a prank to mock him. That's EXACTLY what the hardcore techy crowd think of iPhones. Using one for personal use is considered sort of a mark of shame, like a hardcore gamer person playing Wii. The biggest exception are graphic designers who prefer Macs (and pretty much always have) and thus Apple products in general.
