"Shrieking, pretentious druggies" sounds more like metalheads.
Don't look at us. Most metal artists at least know what melody is, and the average listener can typically comprehend the lyrics and meaning straight away. The ones where you can't take away anything of value over the sound of the vocalist's animalistic wailing - ergo, the ones most like "hardcore" music - I usually don't even like to begin with.Interchange "metal" and "hardcore" in that statement and it's still accurate. As I said above:
I think it's clear most people in this thread especially Townsend don't really know what "hardcore" is, which isn't surprising since most people outside the scene don't. Hardcore really has nothing to do with how "heavy" a band is, or how noisy or abrasive, in fact bands that are big on the latter two are rarely straight hardcore but rather various offshoots of it (this includes most of everyone who has ever played at Dude Fest.) I'd also point out there is a reason why fans of hardcore and fans of death/black metal tend to hate each other.
This is a hardcore band: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7M7e05QsNxs

Then again, I imagine you've never even poked your head outside the screamo bubble, musically, for anything but to sing its praises, so I suppose it's unfair of me to expect you to know.
I just looked at my top 50 artists on last.fm. Of those only eight could be categorized as "screamo" by any definition of the word. And here are the top 10 and genre:
1-Rainer Maria: Post-emo indie rock
2-The Appleseed Cast: Post-rock and emo influenced indie rock
3-Superchunk: Indie rock
4-Mineral : Post-emo indie rock
5-The Wonder Years: Pop-punk hardcore
6-mewithoutYou: Experimental post-hardcore
7-The Hated: Proto-emo
8-Small Towns Burn a Little Slower: post-hardcore/indie rock
9-Ampere: Post-emo hardcore (aka "screamo")
10-The Jealous Sound: Post-emo indie rock
So yeah, actually a big variety.
