Realistically speaking, Austin is the answer. Nashville and New Orleans come to mind too. Gainesville. Certain neighborhoods in the Hampton Roads maybe. And - for an unexpected but not wrong answer - Little Rock.

What about Atlanta and much of northern DeKalb?

Too many northern transplants. I'm sure you'll find loads of southern Liberals there - it's where to move to for many of them - but any areas dominated by them? Not so sure. Might as well get to listing NOVA and the Tampa Bay.

I accept Asheville.

So how about Athens?

If you're going to include Gainesville, how about Tallahassee? I doubt there's that many northern transplants there, though it might be mostly transplants from the non-culturally southern parts of Florida.

The Hampton Roads areas could probably be identified by demographic comparisons on Dave's Redistricting App. Perhaps some areas in Richmond too.

And Louisville probably deserves a mention, even if many would argue (perhaps rightfully) that it's more Midwestern.

OK here's a Hampton Roads map. Color scheme:

Blue: Democratic and lots of blacks
Green: Democratic and lots of blacks...and other minorities
Red: Significantly white Democratic precincts

Definitely a distinct white liberal area in Norfolk. Obama did pretty strong among whites in the surrounding black precincts too based on the numbers:

And here's Richmond:

In this case though red could also mean "Heavily black, but also obviously full of white liberals." One precinct for example was 44% black and over 90% for Obama. That blue island precinct in the sea of red is majority black but Obama also clearly won the white vote heavily too, 61% black but over 90% Obama.

So what do you think about Athens, Tallahassee, and Louisville meeting the criteria? Richmond too as my above map proves.

Yeah I noticed that in Memphis but was shocked at how small it is. And I admitted Louisville is only borderline, but probably deserves a mention regardless.

I'm not too sure what you mean by Montgomery County Texas though.

The one near the center is the only one Obama actually carried, it's a Hispanic majority precinct in Conroe. The other is 36.6% Hispanic VAP and gave Obama 43.5%.

Hmmm I'll check that out.

Made a similar map for Dallas though:

In this case green means Hispanic and yellow means mixed.

A lot of those green precincts voted for McCain though, and many of the green ones near the red area might've had Obama winning the white vote too based on who was actually voting.

I've noticed as well there seems to be a white liberal area out in Denton for some reason.

OK the Conroe precinct was 71.1% Obama. 14.1% white VAP, 20.7% black and 63.3% Hispanic. There's a Hispanic majority precinct to the north with far less blacks that McCain won with over 65%.

So if Hispanics turned out at about half the rate of the other groups (turnout wasn't that much lower than nearby not as Hispanic precincts though) about a third of the voters were black, and it's tough to see where McCain got his 28% from if whites weren't overwhelmingly for him. Still probably better than the rest of Montco. Obama might've done better among whites in the precinct to the north.
