Biden and Trump accept CNN’s invitation to debate on June 27

Quote
President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump have both accepted an invitation from CNN to debate on June 27, a historically early showdown that will set the tone for the final months of the 2024 campaign.

“I’ve received and accepted an invitation from @CNN for a debate on June 27th. Over to you, Donald. As you said: anywhere, any time, any place,” Biden said in a post on X.

Trump later told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, “The answer is yes, I will accept.”

The news is the latest development in a quickly escalating tit-for-tat over debates between the two political rivals. Biden’s campaign earlier called on Trump to join him for two presidential debates hosted by news organizations and formally informed the Commission on Presidential Debates that the president will not participate in its previously scheduled fall debates. The former president quickly said he was on board with earlier debates and told radio host Hugh Hewitt that he would accept any moderator.

They've both accepted a 2nd debate with ABC News for September 10!

Biden, Trump agree to ABC News and CNN debates
Biden and Trump agreed to a prime-time debate at ABC News studios on Sept. 10.

Quote
President Joe Biden and Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, are set to face off in an ABC News presidential debate in September.

Trump and Biden said they have both agreed to a prime-time debate at ABC News studios on Sept. 10.

Before that, they will participate in a CNN debate on June 27 in Atlanta. The debates were scheduled hours after Biden on Wednesday challenged the former president to two debates, which Trump said he was "ready and willing" to do, but pushed for more than two.

"We propose a debate in June, a debate in July, a debate in August, and a debate in September, in addition to the Vice Presidential debate," said Chris LaCivita and Susie Wiles, with the Trump campaign, said in a memo. "Additional dates will allow voters to have maximum exposure to the records and future visions of each candidate."

82% of voters say they already know enough about the two candidates. Another 13% say they wouldn't watch. Fewer than 1% think there's a credible chance a debate could influence their vote.

Fewer than 1% decided 2020.

Does that mean RFK already has a qualifying poll?

It's not like the House is going to pick RFK if Trump & Biden are options.

I don't think about really got anything out of that debate though. I remember a lot of memes about 3 men talking at once. It was just kind of wtf, although it did produce the Proud Boys quote, not that we realized the significance at the time.

I have full confidence in Biden. Sure, he isn't his 2012 self, but Trump has always sucked at debates...
Trump during the 2016 primaries was a classic, the highlights from when he was taking on the entire field never gets old. There is also an argument to be made that he won both debates in 2020.

Not a good one.

He can release his bound delegates. Not that the party is going to try and replace him short of some health disaster or something.

I don't think the audience matters. In GE debates the audience was always asked to hold applause or laughter for the entirety of the debate and that almost always held. Maybe the audience presence affected the candidates somehow but not in a way that was transparent to the audience.

Will the other debates in October still happen then?

Doubtful. Biden sent CPD a letter that their debates are too close to the election in an era of such prolific early and mail in voting and also that they haven't been able to control candidates in the past and refuse to cut the mics.

Unforced error for Biden to push for the mic rule. He won the first debate in 2020 due to Trump being unable to shut up.

Yeah and he can't have another "can you shut up, man" line if the mics are muted.

I think that line hurt him with some people.

To be fair they're both better in math than I am. Math outside of the practical day to day stuff always sounds like space language to me.

Fun fact, real math doesn't even have numbers!

RFK debating I think would help Biden.

June is maybe too early but the September date I think makes sense when voting can last a month in some places.

Well the mics are going to be off when it's not their turn to speak so I guess there won't be interrupting.

I just realized there's less time before the debate than has passed since Trump's conviction, wow.
