She is trying to get people to focus on a purely hypothetical allegedly contemplated crime (blackmailing the US government with nuclear secrets) instead of providing details of the very well done documented crime Trump did commit (stealing government documents, including National Defense Information).

Trump stays out of jail by constantly vomiting out a vast cloud of malign BS that serves as concealment and distraction from his very real crimes. Haberman and the NYT have been helping him for years by amplifying the BS and failing to provide clarity on the obvious wrongdoing. Just because someone is criticizing Trump does not mean that they're right, nor that they're defending rule of law.

Dude everything I've heard from legal experts is that if true it makes it worse and DOJ should look into it.

She's not trying to deflect attention. She had an exclusive and she's reporting it. What reporter doesn't want you to focus on their reporting?

DOJ may be trying to get consent because they don't think they have probable cause and/or want to avoid another huge backlash. Trump may want to make a deal so he can limit the areas they can search, whereas if they get a warrant they may get permission to go almost anywhere again.

Just two weeks ago, Raskin won a guilty plea in a case with parallels to the Trump case — a former FBI analyst in Kansas City who authorities say took more than 300 classified files or documents to her home, including highly sensitive material about al-Qaeda and an associate of Osama bin Laden.

If they give Patel immunity he has to put up or shuttup on the declassification he was supposedly present for with no one else there. He'll be asked about the scope and reason for the declass and how he knows it includes everything at MAL. I think they should do it. Who cares if he can't be prosecuted. Not sure he has any legal exposure on this anyway.

Weissman says appointing a special counsel would slow things down, would not stop criticism (e.g. Mueller), and it's hard to see how anyone would be better to handle this than Garland himself. He says Garland is required to consider the Special Counsel regulations and discussions about that may be what's driving this reporting. And he thinks a Special Counsel won't be appointed.

Attorney General Merrick Garland plans to announce Friday that he has appointed a special counsel to oversee investigations into the retention of national defense information at former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort and key aspects of the criminal investigation into January 6, 2021, according to a senior Justice Department official.

Both investigations implicate the conduct of Trump, who on Tuesday declared his candidacy in the 2024 presidential race, making him a potential rival of President Joe Biden.

Justice Department officials have been debating for weeks whether to appoint a special counsel, CNN previously reported.
