An interesting study. 3.4% of Americans identified as LGBT (4.4% refused to answer either way) Curiously Non Hispanic Whites were the least likely to identify as LGBT; only 3.2% did yet the highest numbers were found; 4.6%. Identification increased with age. 6.4% of 18-29 year olds identified as LGBT (3.5% refused to answer). Contrary to common perception, LGBT identify was higher amongst low income and low educated respondents.
First of all, I am surprised that the number is so low. I thought it was about 10%.
Second, I would have thought that it would have non Hispanic whites, especially upper middle class whites who were more likely to self identify.
Neither has been my experience.
I would understand why older people would self identify. There isn't a parents' reaction to worry about. There are generally less societal pressure to be heterosexual.
