Cardin (who is terrible) and Manning (who is terrible in her own unique way) is the ultimate Race to the Bottom for Maryland voters. Donna Edwards should jump in and take a crack. She’d be great.

This thread has the perfect mix of transphobia, uncritical online lefty hero worship, and spurious Roy Moore comparisons that I never knew I needed

Donna Edwards should run for this seat.  In a political climate in which black women are becoming civically engaged in record numbers?  A state that's heavily African-American?  If anyone wants to unseat Cardin, it's Edwards!

She’d be an improvement, for sure. So would Sarbanes, though he’s a bit bland

Depends on the relevant Maryland statute. Her conviction was not expunged, but I imagine a commutation eliminates parole/probation? So I don’t see why she wouldn’t be.

By the way her first campaign vid is up and apparently it’s a disaster. I’m starting to wonder if this is a bilking campaign like you see often on the right

Oh man I'm trying so hard to resist the temptation to read the previous pages of this thread. This is gonna be a hilarious read when Manning inevitably gets like 6% of the vote and Cardin get 85%.

Trust me, don’t read it. This thread is a bipartisan, across-the-spectrum disaster zone.

June 26, 2018. That's gonna be a hilarious night.

I can see it now: Chelsea conceding in a beautiful and inspiring speach after a spirited campaign, and a million Atlas virgins going U MAD? OWNED LOL I LOVE THE NSA

Just based on demographics, virgins will probably make up a larger proportion of Manning’s support than Cardin’s.

I eagerly await the day that polls include virginity crosstabs

You joke but be careful what you wish for

I still find it hilarious that a TRANSWOMAN is considered some sort of Russian spy.

I guarantee you she hates Russia and Putin.

Then why did she aid a staunch Putin ally and likely FSB asset?

Because the gave the info to the NYT and WaPo first and they did nothing with it? And acting like she should have known everything we know now about WikiLeaks in 2018 way back in 2010 is an extremely bad faith line of criticism, and straight-up revisionist history?

How long of a period of time was there between her (rightfully) contacting NYT and WaPo and her pulling the trigger with Assange? Big newspapers (unlike, say, Fox News) do a ton of fact checking and CYA before they run something this big (like with the Pentagon Papers, a good if more extreme corollary). If it was, say, six or nine months, that’s one thing. Otherwise, if it was only a handful of weeks, that says something about Manning’s lack of patience more so than the newspapers

Also could've just given it to a non-American outlet that wouldn't be worried about legal ramifications, I mean would The Guardian seriously refuse to publish something like that?

Fair point

ICE definitely needs wholesale reform, top to bottom (CBP less so), but I think the “abolish them!” plank is essentially saying “no border or immigration enforcement ever,” aka open borders, which while popular on the far left is a remarkably politically unsustainable position. Not that I think publicunionofficial is advocating, but I suspect that that’s Ms. Manning’s actual position that she’s nodding towards

So there’s a rumor that Chelsea was palling around with Mike Cernovich floating around the Twittersphere

So there’s a rumor that Chelsea was palling around with Mike Cernovich floating around the Twittersphere

Bad reporting n the behalf of Buzzfeed, Manning was there but only as a rabble-rouser/party crasher:

https://twitter.com/xychelsea/status/954931315526299648

There’s some reporting that suggests otherwise, fwiw.

I've deleted a few more posts. If there continue to be discussions of violence against Manning, and personal attacks on other posters, it will be closed and new threads on this topic will be closed. --Mod.

JFC I’ll second this: regardless of how you feel about Manning’s crime and candidacy, she’s served her time and has as much right to seek public office as anyone else. I don’t support her either but hold off on the revenge fantasies. And for Christ’s sake don’t be an asshole and call her a “he.”

Eesh that doesn’t look good. Then again, Cernovich, so doubt everything, but that’s clearly her.

One can disassociate one’s admiration or distaste for Chelsea Manning’s actions while in the US Army from the fact that she’s running a sub-Some Dude tier campaign and has some troubling connections to Twitter alt-right bros
