I know Mackler wouldn't have had a shot in the general, but how the hell did this happen?

TN Dems gonna TN Dem ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

To be specific, look back at TN-Sen ‘12 and TN-Gov ‘14 (they have a history of this)

Alexander won this seat by 30 points in 2014.  This might be the most likely Senate seat other than Tom Cotton's to swing Republican in 2020, given that the Democrats did not nominate their handpicked candidate.

But, even if Hagerty matches the 30 point margin, it would be a very different map.  There's no way that Hagerty wins Shelby County and comes within single digits in Davidson County.

Yeah, it’s not going to be pretty. I read somewhere that she raised less than $10,000. Granted, Democrats were never going to win this seat anyways and she is ideologically better than Mackler, so I have to say I’m fine with her win.
