I-L-L!

I imagine it will take a little while this overhauled roster to jell. But I think come conference play Illinois is going to be a high flying and as tough as anyone in the B1G. Ayo and Kofi and Frazier will be sorely missed. But I'm very excited to see what the next generation of Illini basketball will bring!

Given Beard's contract has a for-cause firing provision for this exact circumstance, I'd expect to see him fired sooner rather than later.

My best guesses as to who will be the next head coach at Texas are:

Baylor Head Coach Scott Drew
Alabama Head Coach Nate Oats
Iowa State Head Coach T.J Otzelberger
Houston Head Coach Kelvin Sampson
Gonzaga Head Coach Mark Few

Mark Few is at Gonzaga for life, and the same is probably true for Kelvin Sampson and Houston.

I get that Houston would want to make sure he is at Houston for life, but what would be Sampson's motivation? As much as Houston would pour all of their resources in to help him, I have a hard time believing Texas wouldn't spend more for him. Maybe after all the chaos in his career he's happy to just keep doing what is working for him. But that would be pretty stunning if he flatly didn't even consider that move.

I have to admit, this is the first time I have gotten remotely worried about Brad Underwood leaving Illinois. Someone suggested it and I can't get it out of my head. He spent a few years coaching in Texas at SFA. Texas could probably give him incrementally more resources, and perhaps play a little more ball with NIL and admissions than Illinois can. Idk. I'm pretty confident he is pretty happy here, but maybe he thinks he has reached his ceiling. Could be in the realm of Brian Kelly to LSU or Lincoln Riley to USC. You never see it coming, but its not that insane when you really think about it.

Notre Dame's would honestly be a lot better of a job if they played Basketball in the Big East (which would work nicely with their strong desire to be Football Independents. Not sure why they don't do it).

Anyways, my guesses as to who will be Brey's successor:

College of Charleston Head Coach Pat Kelsey
Boston Celtics President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens
Florida Atlantic Head Coach Dusty May
Providence Head Coach Ed Cooley
Iona Head Coach Rick Pitino

Mike Brey's tenue at Notre Dame was quite fascinating. He clearly has been a great person to lead the program for so long, but there are moments along the way that I was stunned they didn't move on from him. He made it to the Elite Eight twice, and otherwise never made it to the second weekend of the tournament. But still, 16 seasons of 20+ wins? That's not half bad. I credit the Notre Dame administration and basketball fans for not being delusional, for recognizing what ND basketball aspires to be, and not being as quick to fire like I would be.

Brad Stevens is very interesting... Maybe he really isn't interested in coaching at this point. But if he is, this would make a boatload of sense.

You have to wonder how hazing became such a common thing. "Hey, lets do all this really deviant stuff, but we can get away with it by saying everyone goes through it." Nasty stuff for real.
