Ghengis Khan. His reputation and his success really get to people, somehow. The Mongols weren't any bloodier than any of a hundred different peoples in the world back then (Vlad the Impaler aka Dracula lived two centuries later, and certainly HE was bloody), and they believed in freedom of religion. They also had one of the smallest standing armies of the nations of the time: Mongol horsemen were just much more effective fighters, especially on open plains.
