There are many reasons.

One is that, in America, patriotism trumps nationalism. Your ancestors might be German or Brazilian or Vietnamese, but you can still be an American - if you want to be. Whereas it is pretty nearly impossible to be Japanese, for example, unless you are born of Japanese descent. Same in most of the world. Only a few exceptions exist besides the US. I think Australia and Canada, having circumstances similar to the US (colonies where the vast majority of the population consists of immigrants, and have strong democratic traditions), almost constitute the entirety of it. Supposedly Guyana and Suriname are supposed to be fairly tolerant, from what I've heard - apparently due to a population consisting of a wide variety of immigrants.

Not that America doesn't have its intolerant types, but nations of immigrants are just cut out to be more accepting than 'native' lands of their fellow immigrants.

That's just one of many examples.
