Thanks to those who explained to me how this all works.

(Boy, I'm glad I'm not the SoFA around here anymore!)

I certainly lost some interest in the position when we started this system.

Without the system, the mid-terms would hardly need a SoFA at all.

Isn't SPC and South Park Conservative the same person?

Yes - looks like a typo. The second SPC should be Inks.

To be fair, I think people were focusing on some of the newbies, like Luis Gonzales who registered April 1st and confirmed he was 'recruited'. We have not seen him since and now he turns up and votes. People are going to be concerned about this, particularly if it looks as if they are being 'bused in.'
People made the same claims about other recruits such as Dead0man and Dan Adams who have been or still are Lt. Govs. and convention delegates as well as Sen. Smid who is among our parties most highly respected and active individuals.

Grateful for citations where posters accused Smid of being inactive.
(Daniel Adams was almost invisible until you decided to take charge of the Southeast and get some propositions going again the other week, so I'd consider the charge in his regard to be fairly valid.)

Winston Disraeli is not a registered voter.

Mmm...
He doesn't appear to be on the voter roll, but he did register on 11 April. I'm not sure how long before the election you have to register in order to be valid. Anyone know the current law on this?

The Examiner Senate Election Tracker - Update

Last Voter: Smid
Total Valid Votes Cast: 67
Current Quota: 12

Count 1Votes
Bacon King13(Bacon King, Al, BRTD, bgwah, Rob, Ogre Mage, Ebowed, Sensei, Meeker, Bacon King, John Dibble, Andy Jackson, Boris)
Franzl11(Franzl, Verily, Realisticidealist, HappyWarrior, Torie, Moderate, Jamespol, hughento, sbane, Tender Branson, Earth)
afleitch10(Speed of Sound, Hawk, Hashemite, AndrewCT, ilikeverin, bullmoose, Lunar, Gustaf, afleitch, Winfield)
Lief9(opebo, Lief, Earl, Marokai, Smash, Eraserhead, MaxQue, GMantis, jokerman)
South Park Conservative9(benconstine, RowanBrandon, South Park Conservative, dead0man, Persepolis, tmthforu94, PiT, Inks, NCYankee, Winston Disraeli, officepark)
DownWithTheLeft8(DownWithTheLeft, AHDuke, Jedi, Daniel Adams, BrandonH, Luis Gonzalez, Sam Spade, Smid1)
Purple State7(Purple State, Fritz, Lewis, devilman, CultureKing, Peter, Dc_united_15)

1 This presumes Phil doesn't claim the vote. It's unlikely that claiming the vote will ultimately change anything...but it's possible, depending on circumstances.

Bacon King elected with a surplus of 1.
Purple State eliminated as the surplus can't save him.
(Note: Lief outranks SPC based on 2nd preferences 12-6.)

Count 2Votes
Bacon King13
Franzl14(+3: Purple State, Lewis, Peter)
afleitch11(+1: devilman)
Lief11(+2: Fritz, Dc_united_15)
South Park Conservative9
DownWithTheLeft9(+1: Culture King)
Purple State0(-7)

Franzl elected with a surplus of 2.
The surpluses are distributed in order of election (which is silly, it should be by order of magnitude, I should probably move an amendment to that) so BK's is done first.

Count 3Votes
Bacon King12(-1)
Franzl14
Lief119/13(+9/13: Al, BRTD, bgwah, Rob, Ogre Mage, Sensei, Meeker, Boris, Andy Jackson)
afleitch113/13(+3/13: Ebowed, John Dibble, Bacon King)
DownWithTheLeft9 1/13(+1/13: gporter)
South Park Conservative9

Proceed now to the Franzl distribution...

Count 4Votes
Bacon King12
Franzl12(-2)
Lief12.38(+4/14: jamespol, Lewis Trondheim)
afleitch11.46(+1 4/14: Franzl, Verily, HappyWarrior, Torie, Mr. Moderate, hughento, sbane, Purple State, Peter)
DownWithTheLeft9.16(+2/14: Realisticidealist)
South Park Conservative9
Non-Transferable0.29(+4/14: Tender Branson, Earth)

I converted to decimal for the totals here as the fractions get awkward.
Lief is elected with a surplus of 0.38 and while in theory it could affect the outcome if it largely went to SPC - it doesn't. You can either take my word for it or do the math yourself - it gets quite tedious.

Anyway, as it stands it's:
#1 Bacon King
#2 Franzl
#3 Lief
#4 afleitch
#5 DWTL

At this point it's fair to say that the RPP are very likely to lose one of their seats and that the battle now is between DWTL and SPC for the final seat. Lief and afleitch aren't quite safe yet though.

Franzl124/14(+1: dead0man)
afleitch116/14
Lief102/14
Purple State9
South Park Conservative0(-8)

DWTL and Franzl elected.
DWTL's surplus is distributed first...

Count 5Votes
Bacon King12
DownWithTheLeft12](-3.14)
Franzl12.29
afleitch12.5(+1.07: MasterJedi, Sam Spade, PiT, officepark, Smid, gporter)
Purple State11.08(+2.08: DWTL, AHDuke, Daniel Adams, Brandon H, Luis Gonzalez, RowanBrandon, Persepolis, tmthforu94, Inks, NCYankee)
Lief10.14

Note: I've went to decimals here because the fractions get unwieldy.
afleitch surpasses the quota and is elected.
Though a combined surplus of approximately 0.79 exists, it is insufficient for Lief to catch Purple State, so the count ends and Purple State is deemed elected to the final seat despite not making the quota.

The Examiner
29 May 2009

Smid Stands Down to Settle Down

In a press release issued this morning, Sen. Smid (RPP-NE) has announced that he will not be seeking re-election and so will be retiring from the Atlasian Senate at the end of his current term.

"It is with regret that I announce I will not be re-contesting the Northeast Senate seat", Senator Smid said. "Personal matters in RL will prevent me from devoting the level of attention to Senate business that the citizens of the Northeast deserve."

Senator Smid said that he decided to not run for re-election upon realising that the weekend on which elections would be held was the same weekend as his wedding (19 June) and honeymoon.

"I hope to have other um, 'distractions' on my mind while I'm on my honeymoon", Senator Smid said. "Regional Senate elections will be the last thing on my mind at that time. It is entirely possible that I may not even be able to vote for myself, let alone run a campaign."

"Wedding planning will keep me more occupied than a Senate election campaign", the Senator commented.

Senator Smid emphasised that it was not merely a campaign decision to retire. "Had I contested the election, and had I won, I anticipate I will not be able to devote the necessary time to Senate business once married, although I may attempt to post an 'I'm Married' Thread on the Forum Community Board."

The editorial board of The Examiner commends Sen. Smid on his service in the Atlasian Senate and extends their best wishes to him on this happy occasion.

Jas, the presidential candidates have voiced interest in a debate run by a non-partisan moderator. As you have run great debates in the past, I was wondering if The Examiner was up to running another one.

If the respective candidates express that they are okay with it, then yes, I'm happy to moderate a debate.

Enjoy it while it lasts Smiley
