marathon man

Fairly good, conspiracy thriller. A more effective torture scene than many more modern films. Both Hoffman and Olivier do well.

Lola Rennt

I liked it. Some good funny moments (particularly after the bank robbery). Fit together nicely enough, maybe could have developed some parts further and cut down a little on the actual running - but all in all, not bad.

Little Shop of Horrors

A musical-comedy, apparantly. I don't like musicals and I didn't find it funny... Not impressed, at all.

Dune

Not entirely sure what to make of Dune. Watchable, good cast who generally did fine. I got a bit lost though as to certain plot elements. Might need to see it again to judge it properly.

Don't bother; I love the book but the film is wretched. (and you really need to read the book before the film makes much sense; David Lynch originally wanted to make a four hour version of the film before the studios came in. Ah such is life..)

Yeah, I kinda got the idea that things were being glossed over, the story could have benefitted from an elongation.

Sting does make a good Feud-Raytha though.

I didn't really get the point of his character. He didn't seem to have a purpose except for the duel - which I thought also was quite pointless.

But perhaps it's best if you don't go on too much about Dune. It reveals my most inner nerdiness. Tongue

What'd you expect from a big budget Hollywood summer flick. Enjoyable.

Your review contradicts itself.

Eastern Promises

An interesting piece of work. Heavy on violence from the get go. Deals with some depressing subjects. Nonetheless there's some dark humour there which I appreciated. I thought Viggo Mortenson was very good and the story holds up fairly well. Worth watching.

Hard Candy
A psychological thriller from last year about an encounter between a 14 year old girl and a 32 year old man who meet after chatting online. Don't want to say more as would inevitably give away plot best left discovered on sight.

Really like it. Good story, well written, very well acted by both main actors and solidly directed. Strongly recommend.

It's a Wonderful Life
First time I've seen it. Good story which gets its message across well. James Steward is solid in the lead role. I felt the ending was overly sentimental, but apart from that it was very good.

Good for you. Just giving my opinion.

Amélie

Original, innovative, quirky, funny and clever. The opening, in particular, I really liked. A charming piece of work which works really well. Excellent.

Casablanca
Outstanding. Rick and Louis are great characters with a wonderful interplay. Great story, very well done.

The Seven Year Itch
Monroe is excellent. A charming film with some good comedic moments.

Full Metal Jacket
Some powerful dark comedy, especially in the first half. Felt it drifted a bit in the second half - but still a very good and interesting piece of work.

Spirited Away

Nice, interesting story which seemed to me to be about greed and maturity. Reviews have been very favourable and so probably built my expectations too much, but still a good piece of work.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou
Nowhere near as funny as I'd hoped. Very disappointed (as I seem to be increasingly with Bill Murray films of recent times).

Das Leben der Anderen
Simply outstanding.

Vera Drake

Really engaging film; powerful themes - well told.
Imelda Staunton was particularly good.

Saw Iron Man last weekend. First half was ok, but it fell apart for me as time wore on.

Gone Baby Gone

Perfectly watchable and interesting, but I thought it was lacking...something. Solid, but not outstanding.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

Powerful and moving. I've never seen so many people crying leaving the cinema before.

It's a strange little film which made me laugh much more than I expected it would. Endearing and funny. Thumbs up from me. Smiley

There Will Be Blood

No problems with the acting (both Day-Lewis and Dano are very capable) or the cinematography or the direction or whatnot. But...I don't 'get it'. What was the point of the story?

It's a character study. It's not supposed to have only one simplistic plot coming to an easy conclusion.

I don't recall ever asking for simplistic plots and easy conclusions.

I just don't see why this story merited telling. Why is Plainview's story worthy of a big screen adaptation? I didn't feel the story was particularly entertaining or that there was a great deal to learn from it.

(This isn't to say that I'm trying to convince you of my point of view, art's meaning after all can only be really interpreted by each individual. I'm just saying, I didn't see the point of this particular film.)
