Count staff in Sligo-Leitrim literally using a hacksaw to open a ballot box, the keys for which have been lost.

The Finance Minister Michael Noonan may be in trouble in Limerick City.

Indeed.
Would be the single most surprising result of the election, if he loses out.

On some of the smaller parties...

The Social Democrats 3 outgoing seats are safe (indeed, all three might top the poll in their constituencies). Not clear if they will be able to make any gains, Dublin Central and Dublin MidWest are the most promising avenues.

Green leader Eamon Ryan is in contention in Dublin Bay South. Doesn't look like they'll be in serious contention elsewhere.

No safe Renua seat. Leader Lucinda Creighton is in contention in Dublin Bay South. Billy Timmins in Wicklow also still in the hunt. Terence Flanagan looks like he'll lose his seat. Not likely to pick up any new seats.

A voter in Sligo-Leitrim elected to protest the recent boundary changes. Smiley

An analysis by the Irish Times of all 40 constituencies suggests that Fianna Fail could win over 42 seats putting them within two to three seats of Fine Gael, which looks like it will win between 43 and 47 seats.

STV elections take forever to count. Tongue Any idea when we're going to get the final result?

Tomorrow evening.
Maybe Monday.
Maybe after that.

How is it possible that some constituencies have finished 6 counts already and others haven't been able to finish the first count?

Variances in constituency size/number of ballots to count; differences in the lengths of ballot papers; different numbers of candidates; disputes over ballots; general incompetence... take your pick.

Dún Laoghaire finished, with Bailey and O'Connor (both FG) joining Boyd-Barrett.

Bailey becomes the 100th woman ever elected to Dáil Éireann.

Just Dublin Bay North (with its huge ballot paper), Louth, Cavan-Monaghan, Longford-Westmeath and Healy-Raeland still without a first count result

Saving the best to last... the Rae-volution is on its way.

Joan Burton re-elected at the close of counting in Dublin West.

She narrowly escapes becoming the third Tánaiste in a row to lose her seat.

She may however become the least successful Irish Labour leader ever.
The marker there is the 7 seats Labour won in 1932 from 7.7% of the vote.
The lowest ever vote share for Labour was 5.7% in 1933 which got them 8 seats.

I don't understand why he mentions his function as Taoiseach. If FF becomes the largest party, which afaik cannot be ruled out at this point, Kenny won't lead the government formation process, right? Or how does this exactly work?

There isn't really a formal formation process.

The new Dáil will convene on 10 March.
First order of business will be electing a Chair (known by the Irish language title, Ceann Comhairle).

Second order of business will be electing a Taoiseach.
Each party is entitled to submit a nominee, each of which gets an up or down vote until someone gets a majority in favour. The house may adjourn if its clear nobody can get such a majority.

Until such time as someone gets such a majority, Kenny will remain as acting Taoiseach.

Is there any chance Social Democrats could win more seats? It seems one of them could pull it off in Dublin Central.

Dublin Central is their best chance - but that is itself probably now unlikely to work out.

Respectable efforts in Dublin Bay North, Dublin Mid West, and Galway West are unlikely to translate into seats.

The count in Wexford has been suspended until Monday, when they'll begin with a recount, at the request of the SF candidate.

The last declaration was Count 13 which elected Mick Wallace (Independent 4 Change).

The state of play at Count 13:
Howlin (Lab)Elected Count 9
Browne (FF)Elected Count 10
Wallace (i4C)13,420
D'Arcy (FG)11,371
Kehoe (FG)  9,593
Mythen (SF)  9,405

Quota 11,944
Seats  5

Count 14 would be the distribution of the Wallace surplus of 1,476 - but, as I say, SF have called for a recount.

I'm surprised Mythen didn't wait until the Wallace surplus was distributed.
But hey, more fun and games Monday.

The hardy folk of Cork East are the only ones still counting.
What need have people for sleep when there's votes to be counted!

The latest declaration...

Count 8: Distribution of the eliminated votes of Paul Bradford, Renua

Sherlock (Lab)9,916
O'Keefe (FF)9,880
Stanton (FG)9,647
Buckley (SF)8,175
Ahern (FF)6,216
McCarthy (FG)6,203

Quota 10,562
Seats  4

Count 9 will be the elimination of McCarthy and distribution of his votes.

Looks like Cork East will end up: 1 FG, 1 Lab, 1 FF, 1 SF

By the by, the excellent irishpoliticalmaps.com has been updating election maps of vote share and seats, and is well worth a look.
