From what I know, Reagan in the early 50s was still pretty liberal. His "conversion" happened in the  following decades.

Agreed.  Reagan's political views changed after his acting career was mostly over and in 1954 he took a job to host "General Electric Theater."  A lot of the topics he spoke about in that role led to him to re-think his views on several topics mostly dealing with economic policy.
