Hello Atlas!

Recently I've been thinking of a game we could play together. For now I'll call it "States of Atlas".

It would be played this way:

-Players will create their states, which they'll describe in their economic and demographic characteristics.
-A game moderator will decide which candidates will fit best for the races held in the states created by the players.
-The players will release opinion polls about the races in their states, which will serve as a guide to the moderator to build the candidates' campaigns.
-The players will decide the final results of the election of their state.

Depending on the number of states, we could form a "federal government", for which we'd require a minimum of 13 states to agree on a Constitution. Such federal government would be managed by the game moderator as the creator of all its candidates, with the players deciding if the officeholders continue in office for the following term. If there is no federal government, only statewide elections would be held.

If you're interested in this game, please let me know in this thread. If you have any suggestions for the game, I'll be glad to receive it.

States created so far:
Mannocquan - evergreen
New Western Pacific - 1184AZ
Siouan - vern1988
New Germany - Kingpoleon
Jefferson - Classic Conservative
Rohan - Enduro
Jameson - Potus2036
Appalachia - NeverAgain
Cielona - Leinad
Coahuilteca - TheCranberry
Calechee - Southern Gothic
Narragansett - cxs018

Great, we already have a Democrat, a Republican and an Independent!

Soon I'll be making an example of how the game will be played so that no one gets lost at the moment of truth Smiley

Glad to see quite an amount of interest! Cheesy

Sure why not lol. I will be in, not sure how good I would do, haha. It would be cool if we used a map of the USA and we could make our states out of that map.

This looks like a cool and practical idea. Smiley

Example of state in a few minutes.

I'd like using either Eurasia or the Americas as a basis. I suggest a minimum and maximum size.

This could work too. I'm thinking of doing a poll regarding this in the following days.

OK, I know I'm a little late for this (a little... Tongue) Let's do that example.

1. So, the first step to building your state is to build its demographics.

Which demographics, exactly? You decide! It could be people by location, by race, by income, by religion, by age, by education level... or all of them!

So... let's go with Exampleland.

Exampleland's biggest city is Exampleburg. So by location, Exampleland is divided in the following:

-Downtown Exampleburg (500,000 voters here)
-The 4 "Exampleburg layers" (suburbs and small towns)
 -First layer (200,000 voters)
 -Second layer (40,000 voters)
 -Third layer (45,000 voters)
 -Fourth layer (15,000 voters)
-Rural areas and other towns. (200,000 voters)

In this ocasion, just for the sake of simplicity, I'll be doing the demographics purely by location. It'd be great if you built more complex demographics Tongue

2. The second step is to decide how do this people vote. Are they Democrats, Republicans, Independents or something else? Why? What issues do they care about and what positions to they take on them? Why would they turn out or not?

3. Now that you've built this data, you're ready to play the game! I will (or someone else if I decide to give away the moderator posts) decide which candidates will run in both the primaries and the general elections in your state, and you'll decide which candidates will win, why, who will turn out and who won't and for whom did they turn out. Remember to be as complex as possible! Smiley

So, here are the options we have for our map so far:

-The US
-The Americas
-Eurasia
-A bunch of islands

If you're already in the game, let us know your opinion of the options for the map, or propose your own idea. If you're not, what are you waiting for? Wink

Are we able to recreate current states? I'm interested in doing Minnesota, but revamping politics, demographics, population, etc. while keeping counties and geography of Minnesota. That permissible?

Yeah, you could do that Smiley

Since the US has been established, what if we just used the current map? Like you could annex a state or take away from it, like Evergreen has made a New England state, he/she could, say, combine Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine to make this state. Like we each pick a state/states and revamp them? I think that could be interesting. Just a thought.

Also I'm actually thinking of doing Florida...

I was thinking that too. In fact, I've been thinking on how to accommodate my own state to fit in NYS.

So you'd do Florida instead of Minnesota? Or were you planning both?

Congratulations to Evergreen and 1184AZ for the great job so far Smiley

Just FTR, I'm saving NYS territory for my own state.

I suppose I'm a bit late for New England. Either way, I will have my state in tomorrow, most likely.

Evergreen has not stated which parts of New England she'll use for her state ^^

i would've said leaving the precise locations vague is ok, they don't really seem necessary

Unless you want to do maps, that is.

true. but leaving the locations imprecise means we don't have to worry as much about people overlapping.

(edit: either way is fine tbh. make them optional?)

Sounds like the best idea.

Wow, that's a lot of cool states! Cheesy

Ok guys, some are still missing, so we'll wait for them for a while. In the meantime, I'll be preparing the candidates that will be running in your states during Turn 0. Smiley

Well, looks lie we've had some border dispute, so while these disputes are solved, we'll keep some things slightly vague, while the rest can get their maps done normally.

As this happens, I'd like to thank Kingpoleon for offering to make our general map for the game. It'll be fun to have a general map. Smiley

This looks interesting. Anything left somewhere north and cold?

The Vermont area is still available. Smiley

Since Classic Conservative took up most of the South, could I do the river delta and the rest of Louisiana?

Sure! Smiley

How is the IL/MI border issue being treated here? My understanding was that we can't start until there is clarification or agreement.

I cut it up into three roughly equal pieces. Two thirds are satellites/occupation armies, and the other third remains as disputed land.

Stmarken, may I suggest you post the map here to make sure it's satisfactory to people's claims?

I hope you can see it.

Well, I haven't been talking much about my own state, so I'll do that now.

Galungar is a very politically diverse state. It comprises all of the territory of real-life New York State. As its demographics are very complex, I'll publish its geographical divisions.

Galotu City:

It's the largest city in Galungar, and it's defined by its racial and cultural diversity and the independence of the majority of its voters. The two clues for candidates to campaign here is to pander to minorities and to send a message of unity and problem-solving.

Maita:
It's the state capital of Galungar, and a Democratic stronghold wherever you see it. It may give a small chance to moderate Republicans at the federal level, but not a victory.

Northwest Galungar:

It's the most politically diverse of all the places in Galungar, and its vote will largely depend on which town we are talking about. Some Native Americans live in the rural areas.

Northeast Galungar

A distinguishably cultural liberal area (except for one very religious town), but also a very independent one. Democrats may want to fire up the base here, while moderate Republicans could pull out an upset every once in a while.

Southwest Galungar:

Some Hispanic centers are located in this otherwise regular battleground area, where Golden City and Silver Town are located.

Southeast Galungar:

Despite being located near to the city of Galotu, the politics here are completely different. The area is largely a stronghold for conservative Republicans, although many African Americans live here. Moderate Republicans would be in deep trouble in this area.

(Hope I can update this later. For now, this is all I've got)

OK, I think it's time we start with our first elections Cheesy But there's an important question I should ask. Should we start the game in 2014 or 2016? Midterms or Presidential election? I'll vote for Midterms, so that we can have our governors elected, but what do you say?

Hmmm...I already declared Gary Johnson the Senator in 2014, although I suppose I could retcon that for the greater good. Tongue

I'd already taken this into consideration Wink

Midterms it is then Smiley

Prepare for 2014 folks!

Those are RL references, am I correct? 2014 and 2016? Because I'll be accomodating the numbers of the classes to the mechanism of the game.

What should my state be called? I was thinking something Indian-y.

What about Dakota? Smiley

Very soon. As game moderator, I'm preparing the candidates for the midterms. I'm halfway there, so it's not far Wink
