So the establishment managed to out-crazy the Tea Party candidate - even when he managed to be horrifically insensitive and stupid.

I don't think that was insensitive, he just made a stupid mistake. He was well-intentioned, its was one of those embarrassing gaffes. Just like "stand up, chuck!".

You don't see Congresspeople mistaking white officials for Europeans for a reason.
