After seeing that the election would go to the house, Senator Goldwater negotiated a deal with Vice-President Brooke, that he would endorse him if he agreed to serve only one term, and would endorse DuPont for his Vice-President. Brooke easily agreed. Thus Goldwater is running again, but with very token opposition in Ambassador to the UN, George HW Bush, and Fmr. SoD Alexander Haig.
The Democrats, displeased that despite winning the most votes their candidate should run again, but Hart was caught up in a sex scandal, and refused to run. Ted Kennedy announced a run, but he was running against others who thought he was too liberal to win.
Overall, Brooke's term was uneventful, but he began to oversee a booming economy and saw massive approval ratings. His inauguration was eventful, as he was the first independent since George Washington to become president, and the first African-American as well.
