I think there's a lot of problems with that map, the most obvious being how different states define unemployment.

It's from the BLS which should utilize a uniform standard.  Granted the uniform standard always understates employment--yeah, what ebsy said.

Ok, so granted why is there a 3-4% drop in unemployment once you cross a state line into Virginia, into Iowa for instance. I have a feeling that something is not uniform in these results, it doesn't seem natural, certain states stick out like a sore thumb.

THE WV/VA is pretty easy as the I-81 Corridor is a whole different world than WV.  The IL one is a bit of an anomaly.
