Title: Will anyone ever win all 50 states?
Post by: A18 on August 29, 2004, 12:10:24 AM
Will George Washington always be the one and only to get the support of each state's several electors?

Pick the option that best reflects your view.

Fact: no one has ever won 100% of the EV. Also a fact: winning all 50 states wouldn't be 100%, because of that abomination they call DC.

Alright, whoever said Howard Dean would definitely win all 50 states is sadly mistaken.

No chance.

In 1984, Reagan and Bush lost only one state, Minnesota, by only 4,000 votes!

He came so close...

If there was an extremely popular candidate against an extremely unpopular candidate with an extremely unpolarized, malleable electorate, it might happen, though it probably still wouldn't be that likely.  States like Massachusetts aren't likely to be carried by a Republican any time soon and states like Utah aren't likely to be carried by a Democrat any time soon.

If someone were to win 100% of the electoral votes rather than just all 50 states, it would have to be a Democrat, because I simply do not believe DC will ever, ever go Republican.

Option nine: it would take a super Reagan to do so, but there will always be at least one rebel elector who votes for someone else.

It wont happen this election, but if a popular moderate incumbent who was a good debater squared off against an unpersonable ultraliberal or ultraconservative, it could happen.
A 50 state sweep I'd say is more likely for a Republican, but if you count DC, it'd have to be a Dem.

nope. the electorate is far more polarized now than it was in 1984. Today even Reagan wouldn't win NY, MA, RI and probably a few others.

I don't think anyone will ever get 100% of the EV unless DC's electoral votes are revoked.

I think Guliani could carry New York and New Jersey, though.

Giuliani will never be nominated, so it's a moot point. The GOP will never nominate someone who opposes ALL restrictions on abortions, including the partial birth abortion ban.

Yeah, he has a ridiculous stance. But I'm just saying, a popular candidate from the right state could make things happen...

As things are now, no. But this isn't relevant to the question, now is it? In the future, it may indeed happen.
