Title: More absentee voting discussion....was Absentee voting booth
Post by: Fmr. Gov. NickG on June 16, 2004, 11:59:41 AM

Don't absentee vote in this thread...absentee vote here (http://www.uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?board=13;action=display;threadid=4808).

Have you noticed that Gustaf's says it is not yet official?

This is because he posted it without agreements from those who it needs to make it official, e.g. the Secretary of Forum Affairs or the President.

THAT is why that post is locked, it isn't official and if it weren't locked, people would go and vote in it but their votes would not be counted as it isn't an official ballot.

For the record, what about the senate elections? Anyone doing absentee voting should have the right to cast their vote for senator in whatever district they reside in.

Gustaf should not have this power...he is candidate in the race.

What do you mean?

He locked the thing as it wasn't an official polling booth so people who voted in it would not have official votes! THAT is why it is locked, if it was unlocked it could cause a lot of problems.

I agree....if you wish to vote absentee for Senate, you may also cast your vote here.

Well, I agree to Gustaf's absentee ballot, hopefully the SOFA will concur and it will become official. :)

And yes, there should be preferential voting for Senators as well.

I do not think we should introduce "absentee" voting without proper senatorial debate.

There hasn't been senatorial debate with anything else, so it shouldn't matter. Let the people vote, I say. I concur with Nym, Gov. NickG and Gustaf. Absentee voting is fine for this election.

Puh-lease, Senatorial Debating? There has been none so far in ANY of these votes, I believe that I am the only one who has even made a speech on a bill of reasonable length and one of either 2 or 3 who have proposed amendments. Hughento being one of the others and I think StevenNick has also.

We need to get some Senatorial Debating fullstop.

I apologise if anyone else has made a speech on a bill or an act from the Senate, I just can't remember any off of the top of my head.

Yes, word.
I think what I meant was more like "public debate" (which we're having now) and a proper vote in the Senate.

A vote in the Senate takes a long time, the only really active Senators are Tweed and myself with others being active and some not so active and some not active at all.

I do believe that this discussion comes to late for this election.

Well, is anyone opposed to the concept of absentee voting? Speak now, or forever hold your peace. There haven't been any objections raised at all to it by anyone since I first brought it up a week or so ago.

I'm not opposed in the sense that I think the world would end. I don't think we need absentee voting, though. Coming in once in 48 hours isn't that much of a put on.

True, but a lot of people tend to go out of town for the weekend.

We might open the polls a few hours earlier. That would eliminate this problem just as well.

But would also require - in my view - a change of law.

I would support having the polls open from midnight Friday Eastern time to midnight Monday Eastern time, in other words, a full 72 hours (all day Friday, Saturday, and Sunday).

This would be fine with me.

that is laughable.
tweeds only active when it's HIS bill being considered.

I apologise for any inaccuracy, I suppose it may just seem that way as Tweed has proposed so many Bills, heh.

Not quite the same, hasn't he also posted other Bills? I thought at least one of the others was done by him.....

I will unlock it now since people seem to be unopposed.

So I'm assuming that we are moving to 72 hour voting.
